Applications of SCCs in Pakistan

Scope of study and research:

1. Brief study of history of concrete technology, technological advancements in the last

century and modern practices and materials in local construction industry.

2. Packing concepts in normal concretes and SCCs. Effects of aggregate sizes and
powder ratios in reducing energy waste to facilitate self-compacting systems.

3. In-depth study of indigenous research available on SCCs and developing a sound

understanding of its mechanism, benefits and shortcomings in local climate conditions
(early shrinkage, altered water demand etc.).

4. Discovering the conventional and novel SRMs and the techniques and conditions
best suited for their use in SCCs. Study of effects of Acacia Nicolita gum, mineral
admixtures, EMT and fibers on fresh and hardened properties of SCPs. Special
consideration will be given to researches that allow partial replacement of cementious
materials with local waste materials in SCCs without adversely affecting its properties.

5. Ecological, economic and environmental impact of SCCs in comparison to normal

concretes.

6. Studying the specific behavior of SCCs in hot weather concreting and publishing
recommendations for qualitative assessment of its fluid form, proper placement and
curing methods.

7. Investigation of strength and durability of low-cost SCCs that can be produced

locally. The results will be compared with NCs and standard SCCs.

8. Exploring the potential uses of SCC beyond its well-established scope in prestressed
concretes and possibly identifying situations where SCC would be best suited for use.
Identification of problems that could possibly be avoided by using SCCs instead of
NCs.

9. Assessing availability of required materials in different provinces and cities of

Pakistan and evaluating the limitations of using SCCs in local construction.

10. Publishing a comprehensive summary of the study and recommendations for SCC
use in Pakistan.
