A Narrative Report on
Streamlining the K-12 Curriculum: An Approach to Determining Which Standards and
Competencies to Teach (TLE-ICT)

Date: June 11, 2020

Lecturer: Ms. Consuelo G. Zapanta
Sponsored by: Vibal

“How will the schools now in the new normal be able to cover the K-12 curriculum,
given a lot of distractions brought about the pandemic?” This is the first question the speaker
brought up at the start and assured it that the webinar can answer it and it really did.

The speaker showed to us the different things this pandemic prepared for us as we still aim to
give high quality education to our students, and these are, a) having shortened school calendar b)
varied instruction modalities c) limited to no face to face contact with our students c) reduced class
time and d) frequent disruptors that we cannot control, as we all try to imagine what will happen, the
first answer to the webinar’s question that was mentioned earlier is by being equipped with the help of
DepEd curriculum guide and/or DepEd MELCs and PEAC certification assessment instrument. The
speaker highlighted that MELCS (Most Essential Learning Competencies) should not replace
Curriculum Guides but instead be a source to come up with our Curriculum guides.

We were also introduced to the Sample Diary Curriculum Map, that was divided to 4 parts,
where they also differentiate content standards that speaks of the broad statements on things student
should generally know at the end of every lesson and performance standards curriculum, where we
can use it as to evaluate the specific and the “important” competencies students should have.

The speaker also reminded us not to use this current situation as opportunity to give more
activities or homework to students instead to focus on the characteristics of an Essential Learning
Competency, that it should be aligned, connects, is applicable, and for students to have competence
above many others.

We were taught also about the R.E.A.L criteria approach which can help us educators to come
up with the lessons we have to teach, and the following are, R for Readiness, this standard give us an
idea about the essential knowledge and skills that are necessary for the success in the next class,
course or grade level. E for Endurance, this give us an idea with knowledge and skills that are useful
beyond single study. A for Assessed, by it’s word alone, it will make us assess an upcoming exams to
see how helpful those instruments were. L for Leverage, this approach will provide students with
knowledge and skills that will be helpful in values identifying value in multiple disciplines.

“Streamlining the Teaching and Learning of the K12 Curriculum” Explains to us by the
speaker that it is the path our preparation for the classes to resume. It was differentiate that in laminar
flow, fluid particles follow a smooth path in layers and that with each layer moving parallel to each
other without mixing, while on the other hand, Turbulent flow is where fluid moves in a rough path and
there are cross-currents and mixing of layers.

While the present conversion to online lifestyle is being in demand, it may have a long-term
consequence on how education and learning are delivered. Nevertheless, numerous platform was
made and prepared by the education leadership so that even in a slim chance, students may still feel
that they are being valued as the future of our society. Currently, major challenge is to lessen as
much as possible the negative impact this pandemic will have on learning and education, we as
educators should still be on our shoes to help our government to get back on track the way we used
to be in terms of education system.

While learning still goes on, it does not take into account how or for that matter our teaching
styles have to take place. There are technological options, and the behind the scene preparation of it
will start on how we make sure that the competencies of our students will still be of same value as
what we would like them to have before this global crisis occur. These are challenging time and the
need for flexibility and creativity will and are the key to successfully getting through the crisis, and ICT
is one of the major help we can offer.
