Introduction

Welding Technology

Joining of Materials
MMAW- Manual Metal Arc Welding SS welding – how to weld SS
GMAW-Gas Metal Arc Welding Aluminium Welding- how to weld Al
SAW- Submersed Arc Welding
TIG- Tungsten Inert Gas
MIG –Metal Inert Gas NDT – Non destructive Testing – Ultrasonic,
Eddy current, Magnetic Particle Testing, X-ray
Radiography, Dye Penetration
Joining of Materials
• Soldering –LOW TEMPERATURE
• Brazing- MIDIUM TEMPERATURE
• Welding –HIGH TEMPERATURE

Plastic-Plastic joining found

•Metal-Metal plastic flower in New market

•Plastic to Plastic Metal-Ceramic can be found

•Metal-Ceramic in Mortar Machine

Metal-Ceramic Joining (SS-agate)
Soldering
• Soldering is a process in which two or more
metal items are joined together by melting
and then flowing a filler metal into the joint—
the filler metal having a relatively low melting
point. Soldering is used to form a permanent
connection between electronic components.
Soldering Types:
Soft mp <225oC
Hard mp <450oC
• Soldering is a joining
process which produces
coalescence of materials Soft Solder Materials:
by heating them to a Eutectics –easy melting
suitable temperature and Sn-37 Pb : mp: 183.

by using a filler metal Now Pb is banned.

having a liquidus Zn-9Tin is suitable options mp 199oC
temperature not
exceeding 450oC.
• The filler metal (solder) is
distributed between the
closely fitted surface of
the joint by capillary
action .
Brazing Types: Torch, Furnace, Salt
Bath and Induction Brazing

•The term brazing was used to

describe initially the use of
brass as a filler material for Brazing Filler
joining two metal parts. Very Characteristics:
similar to soldering, only mp of •The ability to wet surface

filler is above 500oC consequently form a
•Brazing is used when a tougher, sound metallurgical bond
stronger joint is required. Most •Sufficient fluidity at the
ferrous and nonferrous metals brazing temperature to

can be joined by brazing filler metal into properly
prepared joints by
capillary action
WELDING
American Welding Society
(AWS): Weld can be defined as
a localized coalescence of
metals or nonmetals produced
by heating the materials to
suitable temperatures, with or
without the application of
pressure, or by the application
of pressure alone and with or
without the Filler metal
Types of Welding Process
Welding Classes
Welding : Fusion and Non-fusion
• Fusion-Thermit, Arc, Flame
 Non-fusion-Forming, Brazing, Resistance
 Arc- Carbon Arc, Metallic Arc, Shielded Arc
• Flame – oxy-acetylene, atomic hydrogen,
oxyhydrogen
• Forming- Blacksmith
• Brazing  Flame: Braze Welding, Silver Welding
• Resistance-Projection, Spot, Seam, Butt
