• SOLUTION

Support Reactions. No joint can be analyzed until the support


reactions arc detennincd. because each joint has more than three
unknown forces acting on it. A free-body diagram of the entire truss is
given in Fig. 6-IOb. Applying the equations of equilibrium. we have

~ u;,= o: 600 N - C x = 0 Cx = 600 N


C+L,Mc = 0; -Ay( 6m ) + 400N(3m ) + 600N(4m) = 0
A y = 600N
600 N - 400 N - c,. = 0 Cy= 200N

The analysis can now start at either joint A or C. The choice is


·'' arbitrary since there are one known and two unknown member forces
acting on the pin at each o[ tht:se joints.
