1 RELIMINARY REMARKS

1/1 SAFETY
The informations contained in this manual must be studied and thoroughly assimilated before
undertaking any maintenance work on the equipment

Remember: SAFETY FIRST!

Always observe the warnings accompanied by the following symbols.

WARNING Operation, maintenance and adjustments are only allowed to persons with
specific training in operation and maintenance of the equipment. Read the operating
and maintenance instructions before using or servicing the equipment.

WARNING: Before starting any maintenance operation ensure that the machine is in a

safe location with good safety, ventilation and lighting conditions. Ensure that lifting
equipments and pedestals are compatible with elements’ weight. Follow all the safety
instructions and ware safety protections as gloves, goggle, helmet, safety boots, ear

protectors.

WARNING: Before any operation stabilize and fix steadily all the elements on suitable
pedestals. Stop the power packs, switch the general power breaker and the battery
switch OFF. Place a tag or a board to warn other members of the personnel that
maintenance work on the machine is in progress.
WARNING
WARNING: Pressurized oil jets could cause severe injuries. Before any operation on
hydraulic circuit, STOP the power pack and release remaining pressure in components
by operating hydraulic control levers several times. Always release the static pressure
WARNING in cylinders before disassemble them.
NEVER WORK ON AN OPERATING CIRCUIT.

WARNING: While tests are in progress, do not allow any other member of the
personnel to stand in the area surrounding the machine. Stay at the control station to
be able to stop the movement and switch off the power pack.
WARNING

WARNING: Maintenance, adjustment and repairs are restricted to qualified personnel

with special training for the particular equipment. Always read the instructions
carefully before starting any maintenance work.
WARNING

CAUTION: Always use suitable tools and work in a clean place when dismantling and
assembling hydraulic components. After removing cylinders the hydraulic inlet/outlet
ports must be plugged to prevent dirt and air intrusion during operation.
CAUTION

WARNING: The operator must always wear required personal protection, such as safety
helmet, protective overall, safety boots, hearing protectors, safety goggles etc.

WARNING

WARNING: Danger of high pressure oil jets.

High pressure oil jets can cause serious personal injuries.
Release the pressure in the hydraulic circuits before opening caps or connections.

Components rod, shank or hydraulic component can be hot and before
starting a maintenance work, please let them cool off.
The operator must have adequate wears as gloves.

The present manual is destined for the use of personnel in charge of carrying out, servicing and
maintenance operations on Jumbos.
It contains maintenance operations schedule and operating methods concerning the main elements of
the ROTORY DRILL RHR 50.
Note that servicing and maintenance operations must be carried out by personnel with the required
qualifications, technical knowledge, and proper training on the machine.

2 INTRODUCTION
2.1 Description
DESCRIPTION

item 1: gear box which includes 2 pinions.

item 2: water flushing device; optional according to the
machine on which it is fitted.
item 3: hydraulic motor, the size (displacement) of the
1 motor makes the difference between those RHR50
rotary drills.

3 PERIODICAL MAINTENANCE
IMPORTANT: during inspection all damages must be reported immediately for correcting action.

EVERY SHIFTS - DAILY

• put 2 shots of grease on each grease

nipples 1 and 2.
Do not overgrease the rock drill, that could
damage the front and rear lip seals.

WEEKLY OR 50H

• check the rod driver 3 for wear.

• if using of water flushing, replace the
water seal installed in the rod driver 3.
Check the wear of the water needle.

EVERY 200 H

Check the lubricating oil level:

• Move the feed to have the rotory drill in
4 vertical position.
• Remove the plug 4.
• The oil must leak by the same hole.
• Refill the rotory drill if the oil dose not flow
out with SAE DIESEL ENGINE OIL.
• Put on the plug.

EVERY 600 H

Replace the lubricating oil:

• Remove the plug 4.
4 • Turn the feed to have the oil drain hole
underneath and let the oil flow out.
• Return the feed and fill the rotory drill with
0.15l of SAE 15W40 DIESEL ENGINE OIL or
move the feed to have the rotory drill in
vertical position and fill it until the oil flow out
by the same hole.
• Put on the plug.

4 MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES

CHECK ROD DRIVER

• remove the bolt which fasten the flange 1,
remove the flange.
• pull up the rod driver 2. Clean it then check the
wear condition of the splines.

5 If water flushing is used

• remove the plug 3.
4 • from the top, push out the water needle 4.
• check condition of the seal 5.

REPLACEMENT OF WATER SEAL

TOOL part number 834 0018 includes guide A and

pusher B.
• remove the worn seal, burn it using a torch.
• place by hand a new water seal in the guide
A • press the seal downward using the pusher and
a mallet. Use in sequence the pin 1 to 4.
• put new "O" rings.

6 MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
6.1 Dismantling

REMOVE ROD DRIVER

• remove the bolt which fasten the flange 1,
remove the flange.

• pull up the rod driver 2. Clean it then check the
wear condition of the splines.

If water flushing is used
• remove the plug 3, remove its "O" ring
• from the top, push out the water needle 4.
• remove the seal 5.

REMOVE HYDRAULIC MOTOR

• remove the 4 screws which fasten the hydraulic
motor 6.
• remove the hydraulic motor assembly, keep it in
3 vertical position as shown.
Wrap it in a clean tissue or bag, make sure that
no parts are moving.

REMOVE BOTH PINIONS

• remove the rear seal flange 7.

• insert a screw driver between the teeth of the
8 pinions through the hole 8 to lock the pinions.
• undo and remove the nut 9.
• from the bottom push out the main gear using a
plastic mallet.

10 • remove the motor flange 10. Clean and wrap it

carefully in a plastic bag or new tissue.
• remove the driver pinon.

Clean thoroughly all parts.

Check all parts for damage.
Check all bearings to find out wear and excessive play. Remove using a puller all
damaged bearings.

REMOVE THE FRONT BEARING

• remove the circlip 1.

• remove the bearing 2.
NOTE: the inner sleeve of the bearing will stay
on the main pinion, remove it from the main
pinion.

• remove the ring 3.
• remove both seals 4 and 5.

REMOVE REAR SEALS

• inside the rear flange remove both seals 6
and 7.

6.2 Assembling
PREPARE THE FRONT FLANGE

4 • Install the dust seal 1.

3 • Install the seal 2.

• Install the stop ring 3.

• press the outer sleeve of the front bearing 4
1 together with the needles.
NOTE: the inner sleeve should be installed on
the main pinion.
• Install the circlip 5.

• put a new "O" ring 6.

PREPARE THE MAIN PINION

• press the inner sleeve of the front bearing 7

on the main pinion.
• press the sleeve 8 on the back of the main
pinion.
• Install the top ring of thrust bearing 9.
NOTE: one ring of this thrust bearing is tighten
on the pinion, the other one is tighten on the
gear box housing.

PREPARE THE DRIVER PINION

• press the top roller bearing 10 on the driver

pinion.
• press the bottom roller bearing 11 on the driver
pinion.

PREPARE THE SEAL FLANGE

• install both new seals 12 and 13 as shown.
• put some grease in the groove 14, install a new
"O" ring.

PREPARE THE HOUSING

• Install the bottom ring of the thrust bearing 15

in the housing.
NOTE: the external diameter of this ring should
be tighten in the hosing bore.
• Install by hand the needle Ass’y of the thrust
bearing. Oil the needles using engine oil SAE
15W40.

INSTALL THE MAIN PINION

• Install by hand the main pinion into the housing.

INSTALL THE FRONT FLANGE

17 • Oil the needles of the bearing and the main

pinion.
• Coat the contact face of those two part with
"LOCTITE 510".
• Install by hand the front flange. At the end of
16 the process use a plastic mallet to allow the "O"
ring to pass into the housing.
• Put some "LOCTITE 243" on the screw
threads. Install the 4 screws, tightening torque
140 mN.
• put a new grease nipple 16.
• install the flange 17 together with the rod driver
(not shown) tightening torque 50 mN.

INSTALL THE REAR ROLLER

• Oil the rear bearing 18, install it by hand.

• Put some "LOCTITE 243" on the nut threads

• lock the pain pinion with a screw driver, tighten
the nut at 120 mN to ensure a correct positioning
of all parts.
• Undo this nut then tighten it firmly by hand. The
rollers must not be preloaded.

• Cut the edge of the nut 19 facing the notch 20
20 then punch the cut part of the nut into the main
19 pinion.

INSTALL THE DRIVER PINION & SEAL FLANGE

• Oil both rollers.
22 • Install by hand the prepared pinion. Rotate by
hand the main pinion to allowed the teeth
insertion.
• Use a plastic mallet to install the bearing into
the housing.
• Coat the contact face of the seal flange 22 with
"LOCTITE 510".
• Install the rear cover (or the water flushing
flange if used).
• Install the 4 screws, tightening torque 50 mN.

PREPARE THE MOTOR FLANGE

• Bend the seal 23 as shown to allow insertion in
the motor flange.
• Install a new "O" ring 24.

INSTALL THE MOTOR FLANGE

B • Gently install the motor flange. Never use

metallic mallet or hammer to install this plate,
The face A is an hydraulic contact component.
• Make sure that the plugged hole B is in the
position shown, facing the firm plate.

INSTALL THE MOTOR ASS’Y

DETAIL

• put a new "O" ring 25 in the motor flange use

some grease to maintain the "O" ring in place.
• CAUTION: When installing the motor assembly
make sure that the drain hole of the motor itself
is facing the drain hole of the motor flange shown
in the detail.
• CAUTION: keep all parts of the motor together
it is recommended to place the rock drill as
shown in the "practical way".
A
• Put some "LOCTITE 243" on the threads of the
four screws then install all 4 screws, tightening
torque 50 mN.
25 • Install then the rod driver and the water flushing
needle and seals as describe page 9 of this
manual.
• install the rotory drill on the feed.
• check the return pressure on the two rotation
ways, the pressure must by > to 12 bar.
• CAUTION: install a separat drain to return at
