EXPERIMENT NO. 1

1. AIM:
The mixer is used to prepare the mud sample with given bentonite and fresh water.

2. APPARATUS REQUIRED:
Hamilton beach mixer

3. CHEMICAL REQUIRED
Bentonite clay, water.

4. PROCEDURE:
A. Weigh 22.5 grams of bentonite by a weighing balance.
B. Measure 350 ml of fresh water or distilled water in a measuring beaker.
C. Mix them in a mixer for 5 minutes on different speeds.
D. Mix until uniform mud sample is prepared.
E. Remove the mud sample and can be used.
5. PRECAUTIONS:
A. The mixer should not be touched while mixing
B. The blades should be kept dry after use otherwise they get rusted.
C. All the parts should be wiped with dry cloth and kept dry after every use

6. RESULT:
22.5 grams of bentonite and 350 ml of water is mixed for 5 minutes in Hamilton beach
mixer and the Drilling Mud with required properties is prepared.

7. QUESTION AND ANSWERS

A. List the advantages obtained by adding weighting material to mud?

Answer:

Drilling Mud is prepared to counter balance the formation pressure by the help of
hydrostatic pressure of the mud. If we need to counter balance high formation
pressure then we need to increase the mud weight for which weighting material is
used.

B. List three (3) names of weighting material?

Answer:

1. Calcium bromide (15.3 ppg)

2. Barite (35 ppg)
3. Hematite (44 ppg)

C. What are the disadvantages of adding solids to the water based mud?

Answer:

Solid material is generally used as a weighting material in drilling fluid but solid
material has some disadvantages like:
1. At the time of stop circulation solid particles can fall down and damage the
equipment used in down-hole like drill pipe and bit.

2. Use of more solid material will make a thicker mud cake and increase the chance
of differential sticking.
D. Give reasons for adding water to your mud?

Answer:
Reasons for adding water to the mud:

1. Dilution of the drilling to obtain the required mud weight and volume.

2. To decrease the viscosity of the drilling mud or to obtain the required rheological
behavior of the drilling mud.
