Engineering PROJECT #1 ON THE COURSE HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES II FOR

YEAR V Extension Students
Objectives
 To be able to develop rating curve at river cross-sections.
 To be able to design diversion head work component: weir/barrage and under sluice.
 To apply khosla’s theory of analyzing subsurface flow and hydraulic jump theory-surface
flow analysis in designing components of diversion headwork.
Data at the proposed site for a diversion head work

- Survey data across the river

1. Use Khosla’s curve to calculate the percentage uplift pressure at points E2 and D3 for
Barrage foundation profile shown below applying the necessary corrections. Assume
floor thickness 1m and 1.5m for downstream and upstream section, respectively.

2. Referring question#1, the following additional data were obtained for the barrage
and other sections of a diversion headwork.
High flood discharge =5800m3/s
High flood level (before construction) =162m
Barrage section water way
– 12 bays each 15m wide.
– 11 piers each 2m wide.
undersliuce part waterway
– 5 bays each 10 m wide
– 4 piers each 2m wide
The thickness of divide wall + fish ladder =3m
Determine Downstream Apron Level and Floor Length for the barrage section
using surface flow analysis at HFL condition only. Assume a 20% discharge
concentration and 1m retrogression.
