METHOD STATEMENT - Masonry

PURPOSE:
This Method Statement describes the construction technology to be undertaken to build masonry of block for cavity
walls and single leaf. References include Arquitecture drawings, shopdrawings for blockwork and schedules.
PLANNING:
The Risk Assessment shall be done prior to the commencement of work. The control measures shall be put into
place to control the identified hazards and Risks. The daily DSTI or mini risk assessment forms part of the
continuous risk assessment process and will be done daily. All persons involved in the task will be deemed
competent to do so.
All equipment to be used will be deemed safe to use.
INSPECTION:
Inspect area prior to commencement of activities.
Inspect tools and equipment.
Inspect scaffolding if being used.

PPE: Overall, Safety shoes, Gloves, Safety glasses, Dust masks (mortar mixers), Hard hats, Safety
harness if working at heights.
SEQUENCE OF WORK:
1. General requirements
1.1 A sample shall be prepared for approval prior to commencement.
1.2 Ensure proper working platform and lighting arrangement provided.
Ensure all constructions drawings including layout, elevations and details are available and approved for

setting out, including tolerances.
1.4 Ensure all measurement equipment are calibrated and certificates are available.
Block units should be visual inspected to confirm configuration, dimensions, colour, presence of any

cracks, efflorescence prior to commencement. Strenght test shall be provided and in the specs.
Surfaces shall be dry broom to remove all loose particles, dust, laitance, efflorescence, etc. and any

projecting fins on concrete surfaces shall be hacked off.
2. Setting out
Building datum and gridlines shall be marked for the setting out of the wall. Double check to ensure

correct positions
All single panels and cavity walls, opennings shall be marked for approval according to drawings and
2.2 appropriate identified. Control joints to be identified. Profiles should be correctly placed to set out the line
and level of the panel. Double check to ensure correct setting out.
3. Laying
Ready mixed cement mortar prior approved shall be applied. Once setting out is approved, construction

of panels shall commence. Wall panels to be constructed plumbed and squared

Where openings are marked, all blocks surrounding shall be reinforced with concrete. If blocks can not

be laid, a small column should be consider.
DPC shall be provided in all exernal wall at the level of the top of concrete floor slab and 150mm above
3.5 ground floor and below any ground floor slab. DPC shall fully cover all the block thickness and an
overlap a minimum of 150mm to be installed.
Cavity walls shall be so made to remove all the excess of mortar that falls into the cavity trays during the

Thermal and accusting isolation is to be installed and adequate fixed as laying of cavity walls proceeds.
3.7 Where expansion joints between buildings a panel wall is to be built, polystyrene sheets shall be

Lintels to support masonry above openings shall be as per specs, placed centrally over opening with a

minimum of 200mm block bearing on each side.

CLOSE OUT:
Housekeeping of the working area.
Cleaning of tools and equipment.
Returning of tools and equipment to the store, report any defects and storeman to ensure the tools and equipment
are being signed off and safe for work again.
