5.0 METHODOLGY

5.1 Setting Plans :

 Setting locations of walls shall be marked by surveyor with offset dimension
according to the approved Axis and Shop Drawings.
 Lay out walls in advance for accurate spacing of surface bond patterns with
uniform joint width and for accurately locating openings.

5.2 Installation :
 Blocks shall be well soaked before using.
 Full and half CMU units only should be used.
 Full mortar bed to be spread well with the trowel ensuring plenty of mortar under the bottom
edges of the first course.
 Installing first course taking into consideration location of openings, intersections.
 For intersections in the first layer putting the block match with the perpendicular wall and in
the second layer the block will be parallel to wall direction and vice versa.
 During construction all embedded conduits or plumping pipes to be installed and keep
cavities and air spaces clean of mortar, also all electrical boxes will be saw cut in place after
building the wall.
 Concrete mortar shall be used for filling hollow cells, under concrete lintels and at opening
jambs.

5.3 Laying Masonry :

 Corners shall be bounded by overlapping units and shall be solid grouted.
 Vertical joints in alternate courses shall plump and in line.
 Partitions shall be bonded to main walls by soothing every third course to a depth
of not less than 100mm.
 Where built-in items are to be embedded in masonry units place a layer of metal
lath in the joint below and to be filled by mortar.
 Blocks laid per day shall not exceed 1.6m.
 Layup walls to comply with the specified construction tolerances with courses
accurately spaced and coordinated with other constructions.
 All units around openings will be filled with mortar.

5.4 Masonry Accessorise And Reinforcement :

 Approved galvanized corrugated steel anchor to be placed every third course to bond CMU to
adjacent support or concrete structure and fixed with shot gun anchors.
 Metal anchors shall be installed vertically every 60 Cm vertically &91.5Cm horizontally.
 Install metal lath every three courses of blocks and should be matched with galvanized
anchors.

5.5 Lintels :
 Provide minimum bearing at each jamb of 100 mm for opening less than 1.5m and
of 200mm for wider openings.

5.6 Mortar And Grout Mixing :

 Bonding material will be mortar composed cement to sand shall be 350kg cement
/m3 sand for wall thickness 10 cm &300kg cement /m3 sand for wall thickness 20
cm.
 Water shall be clean and potable.
 Grout shall be mixed in proportions according to project specifications

5.7 Curing :
 All walls shall be cured by sprinkling water twice a day for period not less
than 5 days.

5.8 Construction Tolerances :

 Walls shall be constructed as a true plan and when tested with a 3000mm
straight edge placed anywhere on the wall in any direction shall be to plane
with not more than 3mm deviation.
 All block work shall be plump vertically with not more than 3mm deviation in
3m height.

5.9 Inspection Request:

 IR1 for first course installation showing the locations, opening,
intersections, recesses with correct dimensions, angles and showing
several types of accessories.
 IR2 for full height to check the true plump and vertically to be within
required deviation.
