METHOD STATEMENT –Excavation for open trenches

PLANNING:
The Risk Assessment shall be done prior to the commencement of work. The control measures shall be put into
place to control the identified hazards and Risks. The daily DSTI or mini risk assessment forms part of the
continuous risk assessment process and will be done daily. All persons involved in the task will be deemed
competent to do so.
All equipment to be used will be deemed safe to use.
INSPECTION:
Inspect the following:
• area of work before commencement to ensure safe access.
• plant and equipment using pre-inspection checklists.
• ll employees have required PPE as per risk assessment
• All open excavations have been barricaded
• All hand tools are pre-use inspected and checklists completed
• Pre-use inspection checklists for TLB, tipper truck and grader
• Competency of all operators

SEQUENCE OF WORK:
1. Purpose and scope
1.1 The purpose of this method statement is to explain the proper procedure on to excavate open trenches .
2. Work procedure
2.1 Check drawing and revisions
2.2 Surveyor to set out level and position control
2.3 Foreman and surveyor need to make sure key personnel understand level and position control
2.4 Excavate trench to correct level and position
2.5 TLB to load excess material into tipper
2.6 A spotter will assist the truck driver where to tip or off load the material.
2.7 Haul material to designated spoil site or fill
After the stockpiled material has been removed, the site shall be reinstated as closely as possible to its

original condition and the surface shall be lightly scarified to promote vegetation growth.

1. REFER TO RISK ASSESSMENT FOR HAZARDS, RISKS AND CONTROLS
CLOSE OUT:
Housekeeping of the working area.
Cleaning of tools and equipment.
Returning of tools and equipment to the store, report any defects and storeman to ensure the tools and equipment
are being signed off and safe for work again.
