Situation number 1 10 Marks

Which negotiation strategy will you apply in each of the following situation and why?

1 A manager of marketing is in a conflict with another manager in his cross-functional

project team. He’d like to resolve the conflict in a way so that he’s on good working terms
with his peer.

2 Yama negotiates to win. He doesn’t feel like he’s really negotiated until he’s left “some
blood on the floor.”

3 Maryam is in a disagreement with her boss’ boss, the executive vice president. Maryam
doesn’t really care about the matter and the executive vice president can make things
difficult for Maryam in her job in the future.

4 Salim wants to go to Palm Beach for spring break, hi parents are saying no. His dad’s
pretty worried that she would even ask because “of all the things college kids do down
there.” Salim wants to make peace because he really wants to go to Europe with a study
group this summer.

5 Halim and Kalim both want a secretary for their departments, but HR will only allocate
one new personnel slot to their general area. Neither can really employ a full-time
secretary but the company has spent its temporary help budget
Situation2
Haider has been with her organization for three years and has received outstanding performance
evaluations. Nasrullah khan came on board one full year later than did Haider. Based upon what
Nasrullah khan has said, Haider believes that Nasrullah khan is earning the same amount of salary
as she does although he is at a lower rank. Haider has been fuming about Nasrullah khan’s salary.
It appears objectively clear to everyone that Haider has superior educational and experiential
credentials. Rumor has it that Nasrullah khan is not performing very well, although rumor also
has it that Nasrullah khan and the vice president have become pretty chummy. Salim Khan, the
vice president, has come into Haider’s office and says the following: “I wanted to be sure that you
were told before the information is generally disseminated. We are promoting Nasrullah khan to
director of the division. You know that you are invaluable in the work you do. We cannot afford
to lose you to administrative matters that Nasrullah khan will be performing. I hope that you will
give Nasrullah khan your full support. Thank you.”

Haider responded, “Oh, if you had offered it to me, I would have declined. I don’t want
administrative work.”

a) Is Haider’s behavior merely passive (unassertive) or aggressive? Why or how? 2 marks

b) What effect is Haider’s behavior having on Nasrullah khan? 2 marks
c) What effect is Haider’s behavior having on him and his working relationships?3 marks
d) If you were in Haider’s position, what would have been your decision 3 marks

Situation 3
The company you currently work for does not have any educational reimbursement benefit
available. You would like to have your employer offer this benefit, as you and many of your
fellow workers would like to go back to school (part-time) and earn your MBA degree. But, the
cost of tuition is expensive, and you would like your company to help with the expenses. Many
of the other companies in your locale and industry do offer their employees this educational
reimbursement, and you would like your company to do so, as well.

Requirement

why? 2 Marks
2- What would be your target point, resistant point, and settlement range? 2 marks

Situation4

The workplace conflict concerned a departmental team of 12 people. The relationship between the

the other siding with the department manager with a few members remaining neutral. There was a
perceived favoritism with respect to approval of leave, training and allowances. There had been
no performance appraisals for two years, and two staff members had been on stress leave for five
weeks.

What would be your course of actions? 2 Marks
b- Do you think adaptive mediation model is applicable in this conflict, if yes how, and if no,
why? 2 Marks
