1. Các danh/tính từ về topic Family trong IELTS Speaking

a. Các từ vựng chỉ các loại gia đình


• Nuclear family: A family group consisting of a pair of adults and their children (a
nuclear family can currently has one mother, one father and 1 - 2 children): Gia
đình hạt nhân, thường là gia đình có 1 bố, 1 mẹ và từ 1-2 con.
E. g: Most households in the Western world tend to be nuclear families.
• Extended family: Larger than the nuclear family, consisting of aunts, uncles, and
cousins all living nearby or in the same household: Gia đình mở rộng (loại gia
đình đông hơn gia đình hạt nhân, bao gồm chú dì cô bác, anh chị em họ cùng
sống chung dưới một nhà).
E.g: If you live with your extended family, they can help to look after your children
when you are busy.
• A matriarchal family: (Can also be used to describe a society): Where the
mother/female is considered to be the most important person - Gia đình mẫu hệ
E.g: In the 19th century, matriarchal family was so popular, particularly in some tribal
areas in Vietnam.
• A patriarchal family: (Can also be used to describe a society) Where the
father/male is considered to be the most important person: Gia đình phụ hệ.
E.g: In a patriarchal family, men usually take a role to lead the family.
• Single-parent family: Where the child/children has only a mother or father: Gia
đình chỉ có bố/mẹ
E.g: Over the past 20 years single-parent families have become even more common
than the so-called "nuclear family" consisting of a mother, father and children. Today
we see all sorts of single parent families: headed by mothers, headed by fathers,
headed by a grandparent raising their grandchildren.

b. Một số danh từ liên quan đến topic Family


• Family tree: A diagram that represents all the members of a family - Cây gia hệ/
Phả hệ
E.g: Family tree reflects the relationship among the relatives.
• Dysfunctional family: A family where there is conflict, misbehavior, and often
child neglect, resulting in poor emotional and physical health - Gia đình bất ổn,
thường xuyên xảy ra cãi vã, bỏ bê con cái, không đáp ứng được nhu cầu về thể
chất lẫn tinh thần.
E.g: Children living in dysfunctional families usually lack parental love and care, so
they may easily turn to crime.
• Stable home: A family which is strong and full of love - Gia đình yên ấm
E.g: Children deserve to live in a stable home with love and care.
• Deprived home: A poor family, not having the things that are necessary for a
pleasant life, such as enough money, food or good living condition - Gia đình
nghèo khó, thiếu thốn.
E.g: All of us prefer to live in a stable home rather than in a deprived home.
• Family trait: Customs and habits in a family - Đặc trưng của gia đình
E.g: One of our family traits is that we talk all the time, so our family gathering tends
to be noisy affairs.
• Close – knit family: Comprising family members in which everyone supports each
other - Gia đình có quan hệ khăng khít.
E.g: We’re a pretty close – knit family. We tend to talk to each other every day.
• Healthy relationship: A good, positive relationship - Mối quan hệ tốt đẹp
E.g: My father has healthy relationships with his cousins.
• Trial separation: An experimental period of living apart - Thử sống ly thân
E.g: Trial separation may eventually lead to divorce.

c. Từ vựng về các thành viên trong gia đình – topic Family


• Relatives: Group of people related by blood or marriage - Anh em nói chung
E.g: Relatives, such as grandparents, can play an important role in helping to raise
children.
• Close relatives/blood relatives: People like parents, children, brothers or sisters -
Anh em gần
E.g: My close relatives affect me a lot in my career path.
• Distant relatives: People like the children of a cousin of your mother or father -
Anh em xa
E.g: I only meet some of my distant relatives on several special occasions such as Tet
holiday.
• Siblings: Brothers or sisters: Anh chị em ruột
E.g: I have three siblings – one brother and two sisters.
• Sibling rivalry: The jealousy, competition and fighting between brothers
and sisters: xung đột anh chị em trong nhà.
E.g: My sister is the person who I always have sibling rivalries with.
• Cousins: A child of one's uncle or aunt - Anh chị em họ
E.g: I get on well with all of my cousins.
• Only/middle child: Having no sibling in family - Con một
E.g: I am an only child so I think because of that I have a closer relationship with my
mother than some other children do.
• Ex – husband/ex – wife: A man/woman that she/he used to be married to -
Chồng/vợ cũ
E.g: It is hard to be friends with an ex-husband.
• Step father/mother: The husband/wife of your mother/father, but not your
biological father/mother - Bố/mẹ kế
E.g: Fortunately, my stepmother is so kind and close to me.

• Step – brother/sister: A son/daughter of one's step parent, by a marriage other


than that with one's own father or mother - Anh chị em là con của bố/mẹ kế
E.g: I guess I’m closest to my step – brother just because we’re almost the same age.
• In – law: A parent of your husband or wife or a member of his or her family: Bố/
mẹ/anh/ chị/ em của vợ/chồng
E.g: Strangely, I think I have a closer relationship with my mother-in - law than my
biological mother.

2. Các động từ và cụm động từ thường gặp trong Topic Family trong IELTS

• To start a family = to settle down: To have the first baby - Có đứa con đầu lòng
E.g: We’re not ready to start a family yet.
• To have children: To be or become a parent = to embark on parenthood - Có con
E.g: Each family in Vietnam is not allowed to have more than two children.
• To expect a baby: To be pregnant - Mang thai
E.g: Jane is expecting a baby.
• To provide for family/ To raise one’s family: Earn enough money to support
family - Nuôi gia đình
E.g: He works very long hours to provide for his family.
E.g: We’re living with my mom now, but we’ll set up home on our own soon.
• To bring up/raise/ To nurture: Take care of children - Chăm sóc nuôi nấng con
cái
E.g: Both mom and dad are taking responsibilities for bringing up their children.
• To divorce: To end relationship between husband and wife - Ly hôn
E.g: More and more couples decide to divorce for many reasons.
• To drift apart from: To become less close to someone - Trở nên xa cách với ai

• Flesh and blood: Someone has same genes as you in your family - Máu mủ ruột

E.g: We share the common emotions because we are flesh and blood.
• It runs in the family: Something is tradition of a family - Di truyền, truyền thống

E.g: We all like to travel around the world. It runs in the family.
• The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree: a child usually has
a similar character or similar qualities to his or her parents: cha nào con nấy
E.g: Her daughter soon showed her own musical talent, proving that the apple

• To run in the family: Something is tradition of a family - Di truyền, truyền thống
