CHAPTER 3

FIELD INVESTIGATION
The testing equipment and personnel for carrying out the requisite field
work were mobilised to the site. These were shifted from one test
location to another location during the course of field work and
demobilised on satisfactory completion of the entire field work.

Locations for the field investigation were identified at the site with the
help of given proposed retail outlet layout. All the field tests were
carried out during the month of November, 2019.

BORE HOLES
In all, three bore hole of 150 mm diameter was drilled at the site of
proposed structure using shell & auger method in accordance to IS:
1892-1976 up to the depth of 6.0m below natural ground level in soil or
up to refusal.

STANDARD PENETRATION TESTS

Standard Penetration Test were conducted in the bore hole at regular /
desired intervals as per IS : 2131-1981. The bore was cleaned up to
the desired depth. Standard spoon sample attached to lower end of ‘A’
size drill rods was driven in the bore hole by means of standard
hammer of 63.5kg falling freely from a height of 75cm. The sampler
was driven 45cm and the number of below required for each 15cm
penetration were recorded. The number of blows required for the first
15cm penetration were not taken into account. This was considered as

Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. -6- The Designers Consortium

seating drive. The number of blows for last 30cm penetration were
designated as SPT ‘N’ value.

In this method, the sampler acts as a probe and the driving energy is
supplied by the fall of the drop weight. The values of ‘N’ depends on
the compactness or relative density of the materiel. In hard formations,
the testing is discontinued if ‘N’ value is found to be 100. It termed as
refusal.

‘N’ value depends upon degrees of saturation and over burden

pressure of the formation. Silty fine sand and fine sand below the water
table develop pore pressure depending on the in-situ void ratio which in
turn affects the effective stress. This change in effective stress
influence the ‘N’ value considerably.

Terzaghi and peck have recommended a correction for ‘N’ values in

case of saturated silty and fine sand when the ‘N’ observed in the field
is higher than 15.

Modified value of field N = N’ = 15 + 1/2 (N-15).

Gibbs and Holtz have found that the over burden on a cohesionless
soil tended to increase the resistance penetration or N value. They
have recommended the use of the following equations for dry or moist
clean sand.

Ncor = Nobs * 35/ (Po + 7)

Po is in t/sqm < 50 t/sqm

if Ncor is greater than 2 x Nobs, Then Ndes = Ncor /2

Soil samples obtained from standard spoon sampler for all above
standard penetration tests were collected in the polythene bags of
suitable size. These samples were properly sealed, labelled, recorded
and carefully transported to the laboratory for testing.

UNDISTURBED SAMPLES
The disturbance to the samples must be reduced to an absolute
minimum so that in-situ structure, water content and void ratio are not
altered. These samples are called undisturbed and are necessary in
determining the in-place density, compressibility and shearing strength
of a natural formation. The important causes of disturbance can be
eliminated or reduced considerably by employing the proper type of
sampler and procedure for collection of samples. Thin walled shell or
tube samplers will produce a small amount of disturbance to sample.
The sampling should be done as per as per IS: 2132-1986 in thin
walled sampling tubes of 100mm dia and 450mm length. The samples
are properly waxed, labelled, stored and transported to the laboratory
for testing.

GROUND WATER TABLE

The ground water table in the area as encountered during the course of
field investigation in boreholes is shown in respective bore log sheet.

CHAPTER 4
LABORATORY TESTS

The following laboratory tests were conducted on selected soil samples

recovered from the bore holes locations:

a) Bulk and Dry Density

b) Sieve Analysis
c) Hydrometer Analysis
d) Liquid and Plastic Limit

e) Shrinkage Limit
f) Specific Gravity
g) Swell Pressure
h) Free Swelling Index

i) Unconfined Compressive Strength

m) Chemical Analysis of soil and water

SPECIFIC GRAVITY
Specific gravity is defined as the ratio of the weight in air of a volume of
soil solids at a given temperature to the weight in air of an equal
volume of distilled water at that temperature. The test was conducted
using pycenometer as per IS 2720 Part-III.

PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION

The procedure for particle size determination is split up into three

stages (a) sieve analysis of soil fraction retained on 4.75 mm aperture
sieve. (b) Sieve analysis of soil passing 4.75 mm sieve and retained on
75 micron sieve. (c) Analysis of portion of soil including that passing
75 micron sieve.

For ‘A’ 80mm, 40mm, 20mm, 10mm, and 4.75mm sieve used. The
analysis is done by dry sieving. For ‘B’ 2mm, 1mm, 600, 250, 150, 75
micron sieve are used. Analysis is done by dry sieving or wet sieving.
For ‘C’ Hydrometer method or Pipette ,method is used.

(-75) micron fraction after wet sieving is subjected to sedimentation

analysis. Organic matter and calcium compounds are removed by pre-
treatment of (-75) micron fraction by adding hydrogen peroxide and
sodium hexametaphosphate. The hydrometer method, based on
stroke’s law separates silt and clay fraction. The calibration of
hydrometer meniscus correction and temperature correction are done
before taking the readings with hydrometer.

LIQUID LIMIT
The number of blows require for soil pat (about 120 gm soil (-) 425
micron mixed thoroughly with distilled water) with different moisture
contents and cut out into two pieces V-shaped gap 2 mm wide at the
bottom and 11 mm at the top and 8 mm deep, the cup falling through

10 mm are determined to close the bottom of groove along a distance

of 10mm. The flow curve is plotted with water content as ordinate and

log number of blows as abscissa. The water content corresponding to

25 blows is taken as the liquid limit of the soil.

PLASTIC LIMIT
About 30 gm of soil (-) 425 micron is mixed just enough with water so
that it may be rolled into a ball. It is rolled into thread on the glass plate
with tips of fingers of one hand. When a diameter of 3-4 mm is
reached, the soil is remoulded again into a ball. Moulding and
remoulding and remoulding process is repeated until the thread starts
just crumbling at a diameter of 3mm. The moisture content at this stage
plastic limit.

SHRINKAGE LIMIT
A Shrinkage dish of stainless steel about 30-40mm in diameter and 15
mm depth is weighed and its volume V is measured by filling mercury
and weighing. A soil sample passing 425 micron sieve is mixed with
distilled water to form a creamy paste which is filled in the dish in level
with the rim. Dish containing soil is weighed to get initial wet mass of
soil. It is dried in oven and weighed to get dry mass. The volume of the
dry soil pot obtained by displacement of mercury.

CONSOLIDATION TEST
The laboratory consolidation test is conducted with consolidation meter
consisting of loading frame and consolidation cell in which the
specimen is kept. The specimen is allowed to consolidate under

number of increments of vertical pressure. The vertical compression of

the specimen is measured by means of dial gauge. To determine

Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. - 11 - The Designers Consortium

REPORT ON GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR NEW RETAIL 2019

compression index, a plot of voids ratio ‘e’ versus ‘log P’ is made. The

initial/virgin compression curve would be a straight line. The slope of

this line would give the compression index.

TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TEST

In the triaxial compression test, a specimen of soil is subjected to three
principal compressive stresses at right angles to one another the
specimen is failed in shear by increasing one of the stresses. The
specimen is cylindrical in shape and the data compressive stresses are
applied by fluid under pressure which acts on all sides of the specimen.
To fail the specimen, additional vertical stress is applied axially on the
top of the specimen. Under these conditions, the vertical axis stress is
the major principal stress, and the intermediate or minor principal
stresses are equal to the confining fluid pressure. The relation between
the principal stresses at failure can be obtained by drawing Mohr’s
circle. At failure, Mohr’s circle is tangent to the strength envelope of
soil. The shear parameters ‘C’ and ‘F’ are obtained from the tangent
drawn on Mohr’s circle drawn from different sets of readings.

CHAPTER 5

TEST RESULTS AND INTERPRETATIONS

SOIL PROFILE
The bore logs of boreholes are given in bore log sheet as shown in
Annexure ‘A’. A thorough perusal of the bore log reveals that on an
average, the sub soil strata at proposed corridor consists of as per
followings:

• Layer-1: Brownish grey silty clay of low plasticity with gravel /

kankars (CL) up to a depth of 5.75m below ground level. It is
classified as CL. The SPT ‘N’ value being in the range of 18-25.

• Layer2: Reddish brown wethered / fracured, soft rock from a depth

of 4.50m below layer 1. Refusal has been encountered at this
depth.

• Ground water table has not been encountered in the boreholes upto
the depth of exploration.

CHEMICAL ANALYSIS
Results of chemical analysis conducted on soil samples collected from
various borehole are shown in Annexure ‘B’. Perusal of these results
shows that all the chemical constituents which are generally harmful to
the foundations are within the limit. Hence, no special

treatment/measures are required for foundations/substructures which

are in contact with soil.

TYPE AND DEPTH OF FOUNDATION

Based on the results of field investigations, laboratory test results and
the details of structures proposed, continuous strip & isolated footing
foundation may be provided depending upon the structural
requirement.

For the present study, the sizes of strip / isolated footing taken for
analysis are 1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m, 2.5m and 3.0m wide footings with the
depth of foundations as 1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m, 2.5m and 3.0m below virgin
ground level.

ANALYSIS OF BEARING CAPACITY

The safe bearing capacity of the subsoil strata for the foundations are
being computed generally in accordance to IS : 6403-1981, IS : 8009
(Part I) –1976 and IS : 1904 -1978 using shear failure criteria and
permissible settlement consideration based on the engineering
properties and strength characteristics of weakest soil layer at around
in the influence zone of foundation.

The net allowable bearing capacity shall be lower of above two

considerations i.e. shear failure criteria and permissible settlement
consideration.

DESIGN SOIL PARAMETERS

SHEAR FAILURE CRITERIA

The value of net safe bearing capacity of sub soil strata has been
estimated by considering local shear failure for foundations laid at
different depth using the following equation for the net ultimate bearing
capacity:
qu = 2/3 CN’c sc dc ic + q ( N’q-1) sq dq iq + 0.5 g B N’gsgdgigW’

The factor of safety has been considered as 2.5.

For strip, isolated & raft footings:

C = 6.0 t/sqm = 90 ’= 06.030

N’c = 06.87, N’q = 01.75, N’g = 00.61

q = Overburden pressure = g*d

Shape Factors ; sc = sq = sg = 1.0 for strip footing
and sc = 1.3, sq = 1.2 and sg = 0.8 for square isolated/raft

Inclination Factors ; ic = iq = ig = 1.0

Ground water table is not encountered upto a depth of exploration in

the month of November, 2019. However, it is considered to rise in the
rainy / monsoon season up to the up to the footing level of foundation
and so water table depth correction factor has been taken as W’ = 0.5

SETTLEMENT CONSIDERATION
The settlement of cohesive layers in the zone of influence were
computed using Compression Index ‘Cc’ values in accordance to
Clause 9.2.2.2 of IS : 8009 (Part I) – 1976 as per following formula.

S=H Cc/1+ eo log10* Po/(Po+ΔP)

Where
Cc = Compression index
H = Zone of compressible layer
eo = Initial void ratio.
Po = Initial pressure at middle of compressible zone.
ΔP = Initial pressure at middle of compressible zone due to applied
load on footing.

The zone of influence below the foundation depth for footing was
generally considered equivalent to one to one and half times of ‘B’
where B is the width of foundation.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The bore logs of boreholes are given in bore log sheet as shown in
Annexure ‘A’. Detailed of the lithology of the strata is already
discussed in previous chapter.

Ground water table has not been encountered in the boreholes up to

the depth of exploration.

The sizes of strip / isolated footing used for analysis are 1.0m to 3.0m
wide footings with the depth of foundations at 1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m, 2.5m
and 3.0m below ground level.

Allowable bearing capacity for the strip & isolated square foundations
based on the shear failure criteria and for 50mm settlement are
tabulated in previous chapter.

Results of chemical analysis conducted on soil samples collected from

representative borehole are shown in Annexure ‘B’. Perusals of these
results show that all the chemical constituents, which are generally
harmful to the foundations are within the permissible limit.

The above recommendations are based on the field data collected from
the various limited test locations and results of laboratory tests carried
out on the soil samples recovered. In case the proposed structure are
located away from the test locations and/or the actual subsoil
conditions varied during the excavation of various foundations (i.e; sub-
