Art Form: VISUAL ARTS

Contemporary Philippine Visual Arts
Who is/are the artist/s
Art Product What is it about?
involved?
A. Painting
It is a mural painting
depicting the people’s
1. Dantaon struggle of freedom and
sovereignty, in
commemoration of the
centennial of the Philippine
Revolution. This takes us
Antipas Delotavo
finally to the processes
depicting of a multitude, of
the people as a moment in
the totality of forces. The
monumental work alludes to
the “march of time,” a
movement in history.
2. Bukog It is one of the artist’s
canvases portraying the
strengths of Visayan women
in the community of sugar
workers. Despite the
ostensibly charming subject,
the works are affected by an
Nunelucio Alvarado
undercurrent of unrest. Here,
the woman is invested with
the classic Alvarado look: a
fiercely delineated stance,
reminiscent woodcuts,
evident in the black outlines
of the figures.
3. Absolution Absolution is the last part of
Mr. Michael Bacol’s series
wherein he tried to portray
the steps of penance. It was
named ABSOLUTION
because the man here is
Michael Bacol
being sorry for all he has
done wrong. He also told me
that he consider this as a self-
portrait because during this
time, he is in a state of
confusion and struggle.

B. Sculpture
Abueva, who hailed from
1. Sandugo
Bohol, created this sculpture
depicting Rajah Sikatuna and
Miguel Lopez de Legazpi of
Spain. It is located in
Barangay Bool, Tagbiliran
Napoleon Abueva
City. It is placed on an open,
and raised dais portraying
five (5) life-sized men
gathered around a table with
Legazpi and Sikatuna
supposedly making a toast.
Pinaglabanan Shrine
2. Pinaglabanan Shrine and
commemorates the Battle of
the Spirit if Pinaglabanan
San Juan del Monte, the first
attempt of the Katipuneros
led by Andres Bonifacio and
Emilio Jacinto to fight the
Spanish Forces in late
Eduardo Castrillo
August of 1896. This is
located at N. Domingo
Corner Pinaglabanan Street,
San Juan, Metro Manila.
This is dedicated to the brave
Katipuneros who fought and
died in that battlefield.
3. The Oblation
(Pahinungod, Oblasyon)
This serves as the iconic
symbol of the University of
the Philippines (UP). It
depicts a man facing upward Guillermo Tolentino
with arms outstretched. This
symbolizes selfless offering
of oneself to his Union.
