ENEREFF ENGINEERS PVT. LTD. GENERAL SPECIFICATION FOR SPECIFICATION NO. REV.
NEW DELHI SOOT BLOWERS
3-12-007 0
This drawing and the design it covers are the property of Enereff Engineers Pvt. Ltd. They are merely loaned and on the borrower’s express agreement that they will not be 1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the requirements of soot blowers which are to be installed in the
convection section/ APH system of process heaters/ boilers in order to have these convective
surfaces clean of all soot/ solid particles to be able to achieve adequate heat transfer during
operation of the system.
1.2 This specification provides the minimum requirements only. This should be read alongwith the

requisition which shall specify project related detailed requirements.

1.3 Soot blowers can be categorised either as electric, pneumatic or manually driven. The soot
blowers can be classified in terms of cleaning medium like steam, water or air. Functionally
these could be classified as rotary, short retractable or long retractable type.
Soot blowers quoted/ supplied against specific enquiry shall be based on fuel firing in the heater/
boiler, cleaning medium available and the type of drive for the blower in line with the enquiry
requirements.
1.4 Soot blowers shall be of proven design keeping in mind the operational needs, type of fuel, fire
box conditions and tube configuration of the convection/ APH section.

2.0 DESIGN & SELECTION

2.1 Soot blowers shall be suitable for outdoor installation and operation in a refinery, petrochemical
or fertilizer complex under the specified conditions.
2.2 In case the steam pressure indicated in the data sheets/ drawings/ sketches is more than that
required by the Soot blower supplier, it shall be responsibilty of the Soot blower supplier to
design and provide for Pressure Reduction Station/ valve arrangement. In casy case the steam
pressure chosen for soot blowing should not be more than 15 kg/cm2g to avoid erosion of heater
refractory. The steam pressure level chosen should be indicated in the bid by the supplier. The
scope of supply should accordingly include for all valves, piping, instrumentation etc. as may be
needed for this purpose.
2.3 Soot blower chosen should take into account the convective tube arrangement and configuration.
The effective cleaning radius should be able to cover the entire tube surfaces required to be
cleaned.
2.4 Steam consumption rate of the soot blowers should be such that a minimum of 4500 kg/ hr of
steam should be able to be passed through them. Soot Blowers should be designed for the actual
steam conditions specified.
2.5 Long retractable soot blowers shall be provided with maximum of two nozzles on each lance
located diametrically apart.
2.6 For retractable soot blowers, the minimum number of tube rows that shall be considered as
covered by one soot blower in the convection section shall be 3 rows against the flow of flue
gases and 4 tube rows with the flow of flue gases. Simultaneously this coverage shall be
minimum 1200 mm in all directions.
2.7 For rotary soot blowers, the number of tube rows covered by one soot blower shall be 3
minimum on both sides. This coverage shall be minimum of 900 mm on each side horizontally.
2.8 Intermediate tube sheet supports shall be considered as a limit to individual soot blower
coverage.

2.9 Supplier should ensure that there is no erosion of the tubes on account of impingement of the
steam jet issuing from the soot blowers. However the flue gas carried particulates which are

deposited on the tube surfaces need to be periodically removed with sufficient force/ energy to
remove them. Manufacturer should indicate the frequency of cleaning though the commonly
recommended frequency is once every shift of 8 hours.
2.10 Wall boxes offered should be suitable for the negative draft values indicated for the convection

box/ APH locations.

3.0 MECHANICAL DETAILS & REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Soot blower lance material shall be suitable for the specified flue gas temperature mentioned in
the enquiry/ data sheet. The minimum metallurgy for a retractable soot blower lance shall be
1.25Cr -0.5Mo (AISI 602) while the tips shall be minimum SS 304. For rotary type soot blower
the selection of material for the lance and tips is even more critical due to the continuous
exposure to the flue gas environment.
3.2 Soot blower shall be supplied in bolted mounting with the convection wall sleeve plate. The
sleeve material shall be minimum SS 304 and suitable for the specified flue gas environment
specified in the enquiry.
3.3 Steam flanges shall be weld neck type raised face in accordance with ANSI B 16.5 unless stated
otherwise. Mating flanges along with requisite gasket/ bolting shall be supplied along with the
soot blowers.
3.4 Following should be kept in mind while finalising the lance and its travel :
i. At the starting point of soot blowing, lance nozzle centre line should clear the inside
refractory face by a maximum of 50 mm so that the maximum blowing length can be
provided. Supplier to note that the convection refractory wall is protected with SS sleeve
and shield plates.
ii. At the end of travel, a clearance of 50 mm is to be considered between lance tube end
and the inside refractory surface.
3.5 Long retractable soot blower should have facility for manual operation in case motor fails for
some reason and the lance has to be withdrawn/ moved.

4.0 ELECTRICALS & INTERLOCKS

4.1 A completely automatically sequential control system shall be provided for multi-blower
operation, if so desired in the enquiry. Each of the soot blower should act in a predetermined
sequence upon activation of a single push button.
4.2 Local push buttons shall be provided as mandatory either on each soot blower or in a panel
mounted on the soot blower platform as per the requirements mentioned in the enquiry
document.
4.3 In general the control panel shall be provided with the following :
4.3.1 Master switch for the soot blowing sequence operation along with switches for individual soot
blower operation or for bypassing of the sequential operation of the soot blowers.
4.3.2 Indicating lamps showing the operation of the soot blowers.
4.3.3 Automatic control of the soot blower steam master valve.

4.3.5 An alarm if the soot blower has not retracted within the specified time. In such an eventuality,
the next soot blower should not start until this stuck blower has been retracted.

4.3.8 Facility to operate any soot blower from the sequential panel or push button local to the blowers.
4.3.9 Facility to annunciate faulty conditions through constantly glowing lamps.
4.4 Provision is to be kept in the panel to bypass any of the interlocks mentioned above.
4.5 Detailed requirements related to panel and other electricals shall be specified in a separate
specification enclosed with the requisition - in case these are required.

5.0 INSPECTION & TESTING

5.1 All equipment shall be subject to inspection by client/ his authorised inspection agency. Vendor
shall make all facilities in his shop/ sub-vendor’s shops for inspection and testing of soot
blowers.
5.2 Following tests shall be carried out as a minimum:
5.2.1 Inspection of important components such as valves, wall box, lance, limit switches, motors etc.
