Upon reading the explanation and reaction of the author on what’s happening in
the usage of Ilocano language inside and outside of the school and how both teachers
and parents played a big role in it, I had some realizations also. I agree on the part
where he said that inside the classroom if someone would speak using her/his native
language they were often penalized by paying a peso or given punitive chores for every
word they had uttered, during my primary grades I had experienced this one and I can
say that it may be seen as inappropriate by the author but for me it was helpful for the
reason that inside the classroom it is where we are supposedly to learn on how to
speak in English or Tagalog and for me it was proper for it opens me to speak formally
and be ready for the next grade levels for my own benefit maybe the wrong act in that
case was the given consequences by the teacher where we need to pay or do
something. Another one was that the part where he said that whenever he would marry
someone and would have a child he would teach his child their native language, I
strongly agree on his stand because for me it is more beneficial if I as a parent someday
would teach my children kankanaey inside our home as their mother tongue and not
any other languages specially English. It is just and right for me to do so because
basing it from current situations in our place when a child doesn’t understand their
playmates language the child is often left behind, this hinders the child to develop
his/her whole aspects as a child. Another reason was that for example I taught my child
English at home and the time has come for her to attend in school, during discussions in
different subjects it is not the English language the teacher would always use because
they have Filipino, aralpan, epp and other subjects where different language are being
used, the child would encounter hardship in understanding her lessons and in some
cases according to my older cousin who had been through out campus teaching she
said that one or more of her students would argue with her specially during English
discussions because of her pronunciations she knew she was right but because maybe
the parent of those children taught them inappropriately during their early childhood they
think they were right already that’s why I think parents should leave that teaching of
English language to teachers.
