1 General references
This installation instruction contains important information which should be read and understood before
installation and start-up. For safe and reliable operation the whole of this guide should be considered
essential reading as safety and operational information is provided in all sections, not only in the "safety
references" section. Both the installer and person responsible for the on-going operation should read and
understand this guide. This guide should always be available at the installation site. This installation guide
refers to the PV module mounting system LORENTZ PM-1-X.

Storage and Operating Conditions

• suitable for worldwide operations

• dry storage of the paper boxes
• further details according to the installation manual, designs for other conditions on request

The total PV module area of the PV modules must not exceed 8.5 m² (91 ft²). The maximum width of the
PV modules, including the distances between the PV modules, must not exceed 5.2 m (205 inch) and the
height must not exceed 2 m (78 inch) with the combined maximum surface area of 8.5 m² (91 ft²). PV
modules certified to IEC 61215 or UL 1703 must be installed vertically. If the PV modules are not certified
to IEC 61215, UL 1703 then care should be taken to assess the suitability for mounting onto the sub-
structure of the PM-1-X.

The customer must consider the local weather conditions and the suitability of the PM-1-X to operate in
these conditions. The Pole Mount structure is designed to perform with a maximum wind speed of 130
km/h (81mph). The maximum ice thickness is 25.4 mm (1 inch) at maximum wind speed. Snow thickness
equivalence of the ice thickness will vary from 50 mm (2 inch) to 300 mm (12 inch) depending on local
conditions. Where modules are installed in non-equatorial regions then the tilt angle of the modules will
reduce the likelihood of high snow thickness. All warranty claims against LORENTZ are invalidated if the
PM-1-X is installed in inappropriate conditions.

1.1 Safety references

Please read this entire installation guide as safety references are included throughout.

Training and qualification of the personnel

All personnel involved in installation, operation and maintenance of the Pole Mount must be appropriately
qualified to undertake the work.

Safe working
All local safety standards, health and safety assessments and good general working practices must be
considered before work begin to prevent accidents.

Consequences
If safety information and advice is not followed then there is a risk of personal injury, equipment damage
and loss of ability to make warranty claims.

Electrical safety
Electronic and electrical systems should only be worked on by qualified and experienced persons who
have been trained and hold the necessary permits, certificates and approvals to meet local codes, require-
ments and laws. Untrained and unqualified persons could cause damage to the equipment and increase
the risk of injury. Local rules, codes, requirements and laws must be met (for example the regulations of
Verband der Elektronik = VDE, Germany).

Inappropriate treatment
The safety of the systems can only be guaranteed when they are installed and operated within the guide-
lines and limits listed in the technical specifications

Before installation of PV modules

Refer to the instruction manuals provided with PV modules and inverters for details about electrical and
mechanical installation requirements.

4 Foundation
Before installing the Pole Mount PM-1-x a suitable foundation is required. Close attention should be paid
that the mounting pole is a minimum 0.4 m into the foundation (more details in the following drawings)
The foundation specified has been designed to meet wind load requirements for the maximum PV mod-
ule surface area.
You should seek professional advice if you plan to use alternative foundation types or sizes. These draw-
ings are examples of a suitable foundation with concrete reinforcement.

Foundations must be designed to meet local standards and requirements.

5 Mounting

The Pole Mount PM-1-x is designed to require minimum servicing or maintenance work. For safe and
reliable operation the system should be checked regularly.

We recommend that nuts, bolts and screws are checked for appropriate tightness 6
months after installation, and then every year.

All nuts, bolts and connection parts are stainless steel to strength class 70. If any parts are replaced they
should be replaced with parts of the same specification.

All data provided is based on the manufacturer´s specifications.

This manual is an installation guide and does not replace good engineering practice.
The local installer should check and verify the installation carefully.

5.1 Required tools and equipment for assembly

• Ring or open end flat spanner, wrench size 17

• Socket nut (½“-drive) for wrench size 17
• Ratchet spanner ½“
• Torque wrench ½“ (needed torque 32 Nm/23.6 Ib-ft)
• Rubber Mallet
• Measuring tape 5 m (200 inch)
• Marker for steel
• Safety shoes, helmet and safety equipment for lifting and handling steel parts over head
• Oil for the screws

5.3 Calculation of the Beam length and installation dimensions

This rack is adjustable for different sizes of PV modules. To assemble the Pole Mount some dimensions
have to be calculated. Ascertain the right installation dimensions as follows:

1. Find the right PV-Module width w

2. Write down the number of PV-Modules n you
want to mount w
3. Calculate the Beam length L1 and the installa-
tion dimension L2

Number of PV Modules = n =

Width of the PV Module = w = [mm / inch]

L1 = n * w + ( n + 1 ) * 30mm = [mm]

L1 = n * w + ( n + 1 ) * 1.2inch = [inch]

L2 = L1 /2 = [mm/inch]

The measurement L3 is only for Pole Mount Systems with an uneven number of PV-Modules necessary.

L3 = w /2 = [mm/inch]

L1 is the total length of the beam. Take the steel marker and mark the position of L2 on the beam. The
Measurement L3 helps you to center the middle PV Module on the beam if your Pole Mount has an une-
ven number of PV Modules.

5.4 Installation of the LORENTZ Pole Mount PM-1-x

Parts of the mounting system are very heavy so care must be taken during
handling, unpacking and installation. Appropriate safety equipment includ-
ing safety gloves and safety shoes must be worn at all times.

Please follow the steps below for the Installation of the LORENTZ Pole
Mount

1. Starting Situation. The Pole (1) is fitted into the foundation

3. Fix the Rack Head (2) with three screws M10x25 (3) to the Pole.
Please use a torque wrench (32Nm). The Rack Head for a 2.5
inch Pole looks different but can also be mounted with these in-
stallation manual.
2. Place the Rack Head (2) on the Pole (1) and adjust in to South.
The long axis of the Rack Head should be oriented to East/West
direction.
