• 1948 : established as Indian National Society for Soil Mechanics
and Foundation Engineering

• 1970 : Name changed to Indian Geotechnical Society. Short, IGS

• 1998 : celebrated its Diamond Jubilee.

• 2023 : will be Platinum Jubilee.

• Affiliation : International Society for Soil Mechanics and


Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).

Objectives:
• To promote Study of Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics, Foundation Engg., Engg.
Geology, Allied Subjects
• To strengthen professional practice through dissemination of technical information
and practical experience.
• To provide common forum for academicians, researchers, designers, construction
engineers, equipment manufacturers and all others.

Presently, IGS has over 4900 members under various

- Presently, total forty five Local Chapters.

-National Executive Committee meeting of IGS is held at 4 such


centres every year.

- IGS has instituted Annual “The Best Local Chapter Award”.

Indian Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference

• To encourage Young Geotechnical Engineers below the age of


35 years.

• Once in every two years, exclusively for Young Geotechnical


Engineers.

• So far, six such Conferences have been organised. Sixth by


IGS-Trichy and Seventh by IGS-Silchar Chapter during 15- -
16th March, 2019.

• Placement opportunities are arranged.

• Best paper awards are given to Young Geotechnical


Engineers on all major Geotechnical Engineering themes

ISSMGE SPONSORED INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES

IGS has hosted several major ISSMGE sponsored international conferences.

• 13th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering at New


Delhi in the year 1994.

• Three Asian Regional Conferences (ARCs) in the years 1960 (New Delhi), 1975
(Bangalore) and 2007 (Kolkata).

• 6th Asian Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference (AYGEC) - Bangalore - 2008.

• 6th International Congress on Environmental Geotechnics (ICEG) -New Delhi - 2010.

• IGS members on several International Technical Committees of ISSMGE.

• Agreement of Co-operation with Geotechnical Societies of USA, Japan and Korea.


Joint Workshops with all these Societies.

• Now in its 48th Year. Scopus listed.

• Currently being published by M/s Springer.


Four issues published.

• Six issues will be published from 2019.

IGS Annual Lecture

• To recognise and honour a member who has made


significant contribution to Geotechnical Engineering, IGS
instituted a prestigious Annual lecture in 1978.

• So far, Forty eminent Geotechnical Engineers have delivered


these lectures.

• The 41th IGS Annual lecture will be delivered by Prof. K.S.


Rao from IIT Delhi.

Travel Support Grant

• IGS provides partial financial support to the authors to


publish their research papers in prestigious International
Conferences, like ICSMGE and ARC.

• 16th ARC will be held in Taipei, Taiwan. Papers are sent


through IGS.
