The Misfortune of sins

All Praise is due to Allah; we praise Him and we seek help from Him. We ask forgiveness from
Him. We repent to Him; and we seek refuge in Him from our own evils and our own sins.
Anyone who is guided by Allah, he is indeed guided; and anyone who has been left astray, will
find no one to guide him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, Only One without
partners; and I bear witness that Muhammad (PBUH) is His servant, and His messenger.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam:
Whenever anything bad happened or a disaster befell one of the Prophet’s companions or they
suffered from a matter of this world, they always blamed themselves for what happened.
They would say, maybe I committed a sin or ignored one of the rights of Allah (SWT) and
disobeyed.
They then went back to Allah in repentance and asked for his forgiveness, and repeated the
words of our first parents Adam and Eve saying:
O Allah! We have wronged ourselves and if you do not forgive us and do not bless us with your
mercy we shall indeed be among the losers.
And whenever anything good happened to them that they were happy for, they said: Many
thanks are to Allah (SWT), who has guided us to this, for without him, we would not have been
guided. Allah (SWT) said:
Whatever good comes to you is from Allah, but whatever evil befalls you is from yourself.
,Dear Muslims
Allah (SWT) created man and honoured him above all other creatures.
He (SWT) commands us just one thing and that is to worship Him alone, to obey Him and to
guard His covenant.
He (SWT) says in the Holy Qur’an: (‫ون‬ ِ ‫س إِاَّل لِ َيعْ ُب ُد‬َ ‫ت ْال ِجنَّ َواإْل ِ ْن‬ ُ ‫)و َما َخلَ ْق‬
َ
I created jinn and mankind only to worship Me: I do not want from them any provision, nor do I
want them to feed Me. And Allah (SWT) guarantees provision for His slaves. He (SWT) says:( ‫َوفِي‬
And in the heavens is your sustenance and all that you have been promised.
And of His Mercy and Justice, whoever respects the Covenant of Allah (SWT) and lives to
worship Him alone then Allah (SWT) will provide happiness for him and a good life on this Earth
as well as entry into Paradise and salvation from the Hellfire in the day of judgment.
However, if he forgets his Covenant with Allah (SWT) i.e. if he disobeys Him by choosing to sin
then Allah (SWT) will replace his happiness with sadness and his life will become hard.
Dear Muslims:
Nowadays, people are complaining about the difficulties they face in their daily lives
and the continuous changes in their condition as a result of time. These difficulties are
related to the widespread of disease and poverty and the absence of blessing from
provision. Yet, they forget that all of these difficulties are happening because of their
own evil actions and bad deeds.
Allah (SWT) said in the Qur’an:
“And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned.
And yet He (SWT) forgives much.
Dear Muslims:
Sins and disobedience of Allah (SWT) have terrible effects in this life and in the hereafter.
Abdullah Bin-Abbas (RAA) said: “A good deeds brightens the face of the person, gives light to
the heart, increases the rizk, increases strength of the body and causes the person to be loved
by people around him.
On the other hand, a sin causes the face to darken, makes the heart dim and blocked, makes
the body lose its strength, causes a decrease in the rizk and puts hatred in the hearts of other
people towards the person.”
Committing Sins have bad effects on people and cause lots of unhappiness and misery for
society as a whole and for the individual.
Those who sin live the life of misery that Allah (SWT) talks about when he says:
َ
As for the one who turns away from My reminder, my commandments then he will have a
miserable life, and We will raise him blind on the Day of Resurrection.".
A person may live a life of misery, even when he has a lot of wealth; that is because he feels
scared constantly and cannot enjoy his wealth.
:Dear Muslims
Ibn Umar said I heard the Prophet (PBUH) saying: “'O Muhajirun, you may be afflicted by five
things; my Allah forbid that you should live to see them.
1- Whenever adultery becomes spread in a society and they make it public, then plague and
other diseases, which were not in their previous generations, will appear and spread among
them.
2-Any group of people who cheat when they measure or weigh, Allah will make their lives hard
on them, and they will be ruled by an unjust ruler out of the punishment of Allah.
3-Any group of people who stop paying Zakkah, Allah will stop the rain from coming down on
them. And if it was not for their animals, they will never get the rain.
4-Any group of people who break their covenant with Allah and His Messenger except
that Allah will enable their enemies to overpower them and take what is in their hands.
5-Their leaders must rule according to the Book of Allah and seek every good from what
Allah has revealed or else Allah will cause them to fight one another.”
Sins have an effect, not only on the individual and society, but even on animals. Mujahid (RAA)
said: Animals curse the human sinners whenever there are periods of famine and lack of food
or when the rain doesn’t come down; they say it is because of the sins of humans.
:Dear Muslims
When a person receives a favour from Allah (SWT) and thanks him for it through obedience and
worship, then Allah (SWT) will keep it for him and increase it.
And if you express gratitude I shall certainly give you more but if you are ungrateful then my
punishment is severe.
However, if a person receives a favour from Allah (SWT) and responds with disobedience and
sinning, then Allah (SWT) will punish him for that in this life and in the hereafter as well.
He (SWT) says:
Allah (SWT) has made an example of a city which was once safe and peaceful. Its rizk came in
abundance from every quarter, yet its people denied the favours of Allah, therefore he caused
it to test hunger and fear as a punishment for what they did.
Dear Muslims:
Obedience and fear of Allah (SWT), and living on the straight path are the things that give
people a happy and content life and reward on the Day of Judgment.
He (SWT) says:
Whoever does righteous deeds whether male or female while he or she is a true believer of
Allah verily, to him we will give a good life in this world with respect, contentment and lawful
rizk.
Dear Muslims:
If people truly believe in Allah (SWT) and obey Him, then He will provide for them more than
they can count. He (SWT) says:
And if the people of the towns had believed and had Taqwâ (piety), certainly, we would have
opened for them blessings and rizk from the heavens and the earth.
If people truly believe in Allah (SWT) and obey him, all his blessings will come to them, but if
they disobey, then all of his curses will come down on them. He (SWT) says
The curse of Allah is upon the transgressors.

Dear Muslims:
We should all know that Allah may give us a chance while we’re still sinning but He will never
forget; He (SWT) is aware of all sins committed and He reminds us of them with light
punishments in this life so that we may go back to him in repentance. He (SWT) says:
َ
Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of the evil which men’s hands have earned,
that he may give them a taste of some of their deeds in order that they may turn back from evil.
Dear Muslims:
The companions of the Prophet (PBUH) always said that a disaster is caused by a sin, and the
removal of the disaster happens after repentance.

We ask Allah (SWT) to forgive us all, and remove our troubles, Amen.
