PAUL ROLLAND STRING PEDAGOGY – CERTIFICATION FAQs – 2019

What are Levels 1, 2, 3, 4?

Rolland Certification is divided into four progressive levels in content and expectation. Upon
completion of each, one is “endorsed” as follows:
Level 1. A Level 1 Certificate is granted to anyone who has attended a full-week Rolland
Workshop. No exam is given at the end of the Workshop. Attending one Workshop makes
anyone 18 and above eligible to apply for Level 2, if desired.
Level 2 ($200 additional fee). For anyone age 18 and above. Application for Level 2 can be
made if one is Level 1 endorsed (see a. above) OR if an applicant studied with Paul Rolland OR if
he/she took his year-long pedagogy course OR attended one of his complete-content
Workshops. Level 2 Candidates must also attend the full week-long Workshop offered with Level
2. Candidates are mentored by a Rolland faculty member during the Workshop. Teaching
observations and a written journal are required and are checked by the Mentor at the end of the
Workshop. Playing and teaching are evaluated at the end of the Workshop. After successful
completion of all requirements, a certificate for Level 2 Endorsement is presented.
Level 3 (Pilot Program for 2020). For anyone age 18 and above. Application for Level 3 can be
made if one is Level 1 and 2 endorsed (see a. and b. above). Level 3 Candidates must also attend
the full week-long Workshop offered with Level 3. Candidates are mentored by a Rolland faculty
member during the Workshop. Teaching assistance and a written journal are required. Playing
and teaching are evaluated at the end of the Workshop. After successful completion of all
requirements, a certificate for Level 3 Endorsement will be presented.
Level 4. For anyone age 18 and above. Application for Level 4 can be made if one is Level 1, 2 and
3 endorsed (see a., b., and c. above). Level 4 Candidates must also attend the full week-long
Workshop and are mentored by a Rolland faculty member during the Workshop. Teaching and a
written journal are required. Playing and teaching are evaluated at the end of the Workshop.
After successful completion of all requirements, full Certification in Paul Rolland String
Pedagogy is awarded.
