EDU 650 WEEK 11 OFFLINE WORKSHOP/TUTORIAL ACTIVITY

SOLUTIONS

1.
 The counsellor is ensuring there is enough
confidentiality because it has been seen that
counselling is done where there is no one else to listen
to their conversations.
 The counsellor is giving positive comments on the
counselee’s view regarding drinking.
 The counsellor is trying to help her reduce the intake of alcohol
and other drinks.
 The counsellor is trying to motivate the student towards her
studies.

2. The counsellor student relationship looks very personal. She is

asking about the students personal feelings in regards to drinking
and her values.

3. The questions asked are very personal in regards to the student’s

view on drinking and her planning.

Example of paraphrasing:
Counsellor: Ok...You mentioned a couple of times that you made a few
decisions to limit the dangerous aspects of alcohol… Why do you
make those decisions?

4. Counselling in Fiji, is typically a process in which persons with

authority advise or direct their clients, often without hearing their
stories.
Counselling traditionally has been perceived as a corrective process
administered by elder family members, village leaders, clergy, and
teachers who counsel those who stray from cultural or religious
norms. Clients, because of their cultural upbringing, are prone to
follow the advice and directions without question. Therefore, in the
Fijian context, counselling is described as directive advising.
6.
 Empathic understanding – being thoughtful to experiences, opinions,
emotional state of another.

 Unconditional positive regard- is the basic acceptance and support of

a person regardless of what the person says or does.

 Congruence- the state of agreement.

 Respect- have due regard for someone’s feelings.

 Listening skills- requires the counsellor to be an active listener by

fully concentrating, understanding and responding to the counselee.

 Confidentiality- Counsellors should keep everything secret on

whatever discussion takes place between the counsellors and the
student.

 Trustworthiness- counsellors should be people on whom the students

can rely on.

 Non-judgmental- counsellors should avoid moral judgements during

counselling.

7.

Autonomy- allowing student to choose course of action based on

his/her own values. Example: counsellors should protect
confidentiality of information given by the student.

Non maleficence- ensuring limitations on confidentiality, where

wellbeing of another or self is at risk.

Beneficence- actively doing good or acting for the benefit of the

student. Example: the counsellor should have a structured and
documented approach.
