FIRST VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD

March 16, 1521 – nakapuntang Zamal (Samar)

March 17, 1521 – Captain General nagdecide na maghanap ng panibagong place (uninhabited island)
para mas makapagpahinga at mas secure at nagtayo sya ng dalawang tent.

March 18, 1521 – may bangkang dumating na may 9 na taong naroroon. Nung una nangampa pa sila
kung welcome ba sila pero eventually winelcome sila ng mga tao.

 Captain general “reasonable men” daw yung mga tao kaya nagpakain sila at nagbigay ng mga
kung ano anong bagay. (red caps, mirror, combs, bell, ivory, bocasine, etc.)
 As a result sa courtesy ng Captain General yung mga tao ay nagbigay din ng pagkain sa kanila
(fish, jar of palm wine – uraca, banana, coconuts)
 Para magkaintindihan nag sign lang sila using their hands na magdadala sila ng “umay or rice” at
coconuts etc. after 4 days.

COCONUTS

 Wine: They bore a hole into the heart of the said palm at the top called “palmits” from which
distils liquor which resembles white mist. (Liquor – sweet but somewhat tart and is gathered in
canes of bamboo.)
 Palm: bears fruit called coconut. (Coconut – 1. large as the head, 2. outside husk: green and
thicker than 2 fingers, certain filaments are found in the husk, under the husk: hard shell thicker
than the shell of a walnut: w/c they burn and therefore make a powder that is useful to them,
under the shell: white marrowy substance 1 finger thickness and can eat.
 Clear sweet water: found in the middle of the marrowy substance
 OIL: when they wish to make oil they take that coconut then allow the marrowy substance and
the water to putrefy then they boils it and it becomes oil butter.
 VINEGAR: they allow the only water to putrefy and then place it in the sun and a vinegar result
like white wine will form.
 MILK: scrapped the marrow substance and then mixed them with the scrapings with its own
water which is strained by a cloth and so obtained the goat’s milk.
 A FAMILY BY _____ CAN BE SUPPORTED BY TWO TREES. (Utilizing the coconut for a
week then the other after 8 days for the wine if they didn’t do it the trees might dry up)

MARCH 22, FRIDAY

HIUNANGHAN, IBUSSON AND ABARIEN)

MARCH 28, THURSDAY MORNING

 We saw a fire in the island before we anchored near it.


 We saw a small boat which they called BOLOTO (BAROTO) with 8 men approaching. A slave
from ZAMATRA (SUMATRA) which was formerly called TAPROBANA spoke to them and
they understand him came alongside with him.
 The captain general seeing that they do not trust us threw them a red cap and other things
tied to a bit of wood. They gladly received it and went away to advice their king. About 2 hours
later we saw a two balanghai coming. They were full of men and with their king. We gave them
presents and they understand the slave. They welcomed us and we show them our ship but
rejected our gift.

MARCH 29, HOLY FIRDAY

 The captain general sent his slave to ask the king to give them food. For we came as friends and
not as enemies.
 The king came with 6-8 men and gave them what they need. We also give them gifts as return.
 Then the captain general told the slave to tell them that he desired to be CASI CASI (Brother)
the king replied that he also wished the same.
 The captain general showed them the artillery then fired some of them the natives were again
frightened.
 Then the CG shoed an armed man as a soldier and placed him in the middle of the three men who
struck him in all parts of their body the king is speechless and amazed. The CG general told him
through the slave that those armed men were worth one hundred of his own men the king
agreed. He said he had two hundred men in each ship, he also showed the swords etc. and his
experience.
 Lastly the CG wants to send two of his men so he can show the other things the king agreed.

 There is a mass attended by the natives.

APRIL 7, SUNDAY

 We entered the port of ZUBU.


 Nagpaputok sila kaya natakot ang mga tao. They said yung pagpapaputok is sign of peace and
friendship. Nagpadala ng interpreter para makipagusap sa king
 The interpreter said that his master is a captain of a great king. He also wanted to discover
MALUCO.
 They said kung ano yung kailangan nila at ayun yung food na nirefer ng king MAZAUA,
 If he wanted peace they will give peace but if war then war.
 Muslim merchant said cata raia chita (LOOK WELL SIRE, THESE MEN ARE THE SAME
WHO CONQUERED CALICUT, MALACA AND ALL INDIA MAGIORE. IF THEY
TREATED WELL, THEY WILL GIVE GOOD TREATMENT. IF THEY TREATED EVIL,

TUESDAY MORNING

 The king of Mazaua came to the ship with the Muslims, he saluted the CG in behalf of the King
of ZUBU.

 The captain general told him not to be frightened for our arms are soft towards our friends and

WEDNESDAY MORNING

 May namatay na kasama nila tianong kung pwedeng ibury okay lang daw then nilagyan nila ng
cross.
