OUTLINE OF EXCERPT FROM ANTONIO PIGAFETTA’S FIRST VOYAGE

AROUND THE WORLD

 MARCH 16, 1521 (SATURDAY DAWN) - we came upon a high land at a

distance of 300 leagues from islands of Ladroni
 LADRONI - island named Zamal (Samar)

The following day, the captain-heneral desired to land on the other island
which was uninhabited and lay to the right of the above mentioned island, in order to
be more secure, and to get water and to have rest.

 2 tents set up on the shore for the sick and had a sow killed for them

 MARCH 18 (MONDAY AFTERNOON)- a boat coming towards us with 9 men

 becausee of this the captain heneral ordered that no one should move or say a
word without his permission
 When they reached the shore their chief went immediately to the captain
general, giving signs of joy because of our arrival
 5 of them stay with us, while the others goes fishing
 The captain saw that they are reasonable men so he ordered food for them
and gave them red caps, mirrors, combs bells ivory, bocasine, and other
things
 In return to the captains courtesy, they presented fish, a jar of palm wine
which they call uraca (arrack), figs more than one palm long (bananas), and
others which are smaller and more delicate, and 2 coconuts
 They made sign by their hands that they woud bring umay or rice, and
coconuts and many other articles of food within 4 days

 COCONUTS - fruit of the palm tree

 to be made as a bread, wine, oil, vinegar where people all get from that tree
 They get WINE in a following manner:
 Bore a hole into the heart of the said palm at the top called palmito, from
which distils a liquor which resembles white mist
 the liquor is sweet but somewhat tart, and is gathered in canes of a bamboo as
thick as the leg and thicker
 They fasten the bamboo to the tree at evening for the morning, and in
morning for the evening
 Palm - bears fruit , namely the coconut, which is as large as the head
 Outside husk is green an thicker than 2 fingers
 Certain filaments are found in the husk, whence is made cord for
binding together their boats
 Under the husk:
 Their is a hard shell, much thicker than the shell of wallnut, which
they burn and make there from a powder that is useful to them
 Under the shell there is a white marrowy substance (1 finger in
thickness), they eat fresh with meat and fish as we do bread, and it has
taste resembling an almond
 it could be dried and made into bread
 Clear water inside the white marrowy substance which is very refreshing
 When the water stands for a while after having been collected, it
congeals and becomes like an apple.
 Oil - they take that coconut, and allow the marrowy substance and
the water to putrefy. Then they boil it and it becomes oil like butter.
 Milk (like goat’s milk) can also be made from it, by scrapping the marrowy
substance with it own water that is strained with cloth
 Palms - resemble date-palms, but although not smooth they are less knotty
than latter
 2 trees can support 10 persons family
