Module 3

Engr. Lawrence P. Grana, Science Research Assistant on the project


Establishment of IP-TBM in Caraga State University, joined other sixteen
participating consortia universities of the program IP-TBM during the ‘DOST-
PCAARRD, Technology Commercialization Mentorship Series, Module 3’. The
event was held at the RD Guerrero III, DPITC, DOST-PCAARRD, Los Baños,
Laguna last March 27 to 29, 2019.

March 27, 2019

The first presentation was the Introduction to IP Valuation and


presented by Mr. Caezar Angelito Arceo the Supervising SRS of IDD, DOST-
TAPI. Mr. Arceo discussed the basics of how IP valuation works and
importance thereof. Mr. Arceo also lectured on Factors to Analyze Patents for
Valuation. The next presenter was Atty. Marion Ivy Decena the Division
Manager, of IDD, DOST-TAPI. Atty. Decena discussed the Factors to
Determine the Value. After the discussion on the basics of IP valuation, Atty.
Decena discussed the Cost Method of IP Valuation. Atty. Decena provides
technical lectures especially for the parameters needed to come up with the
valuation. The cost method of IP valuation is basically the consideration to the
cost of research and development of the technology. A workshop is conducted
to practice the new learnings.

March 28, 2019

The second day of the mentorship series was resumed with the same
speakers Mr. Arceo and Atty. Decena. Mr. Arceo discussed another method of
IP valuation, the Market method. Mr. Arceo emphasizes that when using the
market method a comparable that is existing on the industry would be used as
the basis for the said method. He presents different approaches on how to
come-up on IP value through market method. Thereafter another set of
workshop is given to exercise the new learnings. Another method for IP
valuation which is the Income method is presented by Atty. Decena. Atty.
Decena As presented by Atty. Decena, the income method is referring to the
cash flow considering that the technology is commercialized on a certain
projected period. Atty. Decena emphasizes different approach to acquire IP
value using the income method. The participants carried-out the workshop
given by atty. Decena.

March 29, 2019

The last day for the module 3 was started with the topic presentation of
Mr. Arceo regarding to the Freedom to Operate as Basis of Valuation. In the
consideration of the existing technology having registered in one
region/country the IP value will be affected. The existing technology could be
included to strengthen or devaluate the technology to be commercialized.

The participants presented their technologies to be commercialized


using the methods discussed by the speakers. Kenneth Ciudad and Lawrence
Grana, as representative from CSU, presented the Cacao Bean Extractor IP
Valuation. The presentation was delivered well with some comments from the
speakers.
