TEACHING AND LEARNING DURING MCO PERIOD

DATE:

12th MAY 2020 & 14th MAY 2020

VENUE:

ZOOM MEETING

1. INTRODUCTION
The COVID-19 pandemic is first and foremost a health crisis. Many countries have

1
decided to close schools, colleges and universities. Home schooling is not only a
massive shock to parents’ productivity, but also to children’s social life and learning.
Teaching is moving online, on an untested and unprecedented scale.

Student assessments are also moving online, with a lot of trial and error and
uncertainty for everyone. Many assessments have simply been cancelled.
Importantly, these interruptions will not just be a short-term issue, but can also have
long-term consequences for the affected cohorts and are likely to increase
inequality.

2. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

In this report, we will share information and opinions on the teachers teaching and
learning during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

3. DATA AND OBSERVATION

Madam SOON SWAN THEN has delivered her lesson for three times a week. She
fixed her lesson on every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. She assigned vocabulary,
quizzes and comprehension to the pupils via WhatsApp. Moreover, she also assessed
her pupils with the exam format question from paper 1 and paper 2. Pupils would
snap photos and sent back to her for checking. The problem that arose was lack of
homework feedback from the students especially the 6A and 4C classes.

Miss LEE SWEE FONG has implemented Google Classroom for her 6S and 4R
classes. She shared videos, slides and comprehension by using Google Form. The
pupils’ have shown good feedback. Unfortunately, her 5C class failed to use the
Google Classroom platform, so she switched it with the WhatsApp method. She had
her lesson twice a week too.

Madam KOW MAM CHING had her lesson every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
She mentioned that she chose WhatsApp as her teaching method with the pupils.
She would record her voice then posted homework in pdf file format to the pupils.
Her 6P’s pupils gave better respond but, her 4K had worse feedback. Some of them
simply completed their homework to hand in while some of the students ignored
their homework although been informed to the parents.

Madam SIA SZU MIIN preferred to use WhatsApp to teach. She would assign

2
homework to the pupils at 10 a.m. and gave out the answers as checking at 3 p.m. So
far, she asked the pupils to copy text from the textbook. Furthermore, pupils also
copied essay, vocabulary, idioms on their exercise book. The worst problem that she
faced was the 5A’ class. Recently, only few of the pupils followed her lesson. The rest
did not participated because they did not own the hand phones, laptops or tabs by
themselves as the devices are belonging to their parents. Once their parents gone to
work the information cannot be reached to them.

Madam LEE SIAM YOONG has chosen ZOOM and WhatsApp to meet with her pupils.
She also taught twice in a week. For her 5S’s class, when she did reading with the
pupils, she would share out the text before held the discussion via online ZOOM
meeting. Then, pupils are asked to find out the vocabulary or phrase words
meanings. In addition, she also gave writing activities and social expression tasks to
the pupils. After completing, pupils are required to snap photo of their work. On the
other hand, she also shared the same exercise among her 4P and 5K pupils as these
classes have the same learning proficiency level.

Madam LIM QIAN HUI has carried out her lesson twice a week. It was on Monday
and Wednesday. Most of the time, she was using ZOOM Meeeting and Quizizz to
assign the homework to the 2C’s pupils in the afternoon.

Madam CHRISTINE YAP has a flexible timetable to deliver her lesson for 1P’s pupils.
She will assigned the task when the class do not have much homework on that day.
She also prepared her own notes and worksheets for the pupils to print out or copy.
Besides, she used to use Quizizz via WhatsApp to spread homework and yet, it
shown good feedback from the pupils.

Miss GOH CHENGMIN conducted her five classes lesson via the classes WhatsApp
group. She had her lesson twice a week. Sometimes, she will create quizzes through
Quiziz link. Students can do the task as many times as they want till they scored full
marks. Beside that, she also gave grammar exercises and asked the pupils to copy it
on their exercise book. The problem that she faced was a complain by some
parents where the parents dislike their kid to do a lot of writing activities.

Madam WONG CHEW NIE had her lesson every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
She mentioned that she used to use WhatsApp and Google Form as her teaching
method. She shared the videos from You Tube channel and assigned grammar
activity to the pupils by using Google Form. Most of the time, she will use the text
book to teach and gave worksheet as homework. At the beginning, she faced
problem with a few parents who misunderstood her instructions in doing

3
homework but, after got clearer information, they coped to give a good co-
operation to her.

Madam JOSEPHINE OON has no any problems with her 2P’s class. She used to do
revision on grammar practice with the pupils by using Quiziz. Her pupils can do as
many attempts as they want and checked their scores as well as the correct
answers after submitted the quiz.

As other teachers, Miss NEO XUE YEE also chose WhatsApp as her teaching method
for the five classes. She assigned the homework by using Google Form. To make her
lesson more interesting, she also created quizzes for the pupils. Sometimes, she
picked up some videos that related to the topics that she taught from the You Tube
channel to arouse pupils interest and as their prior knowledge.

Madam TAN SUE YEE preferred to teach using WhatsApp. She stated that, she fixed
every Monday and Wednesday for her Year 1 lesson while every Tuesday and
Thursday for Year 3 lesson. She has assigned exercises such as quizzes, grammar
practice, social expression exercise, comprehension text, and sentences
construction via Google Form and Quiziz link. Most of the time, pupils can look at
their scores and checked for the correct answers after completing the tasks. Marks
will be recorded in the sheet too. For some writing exercise, pupils have to snap
photo for the teacher’s checking. She also selected some suitable and related topics
videos as examples to the pupils. The problem that she faced was those pupils who
incomplete the homework given keep themselves silent and no responding
although been informed. 3K’s class is her worst class in handed in the homework.

4. CONCLUSION
Overall from the sharing, findings that online teaching and learning (PdP) method
was not as effective as face-to-face sessions. There are factors like body language
and attendance that are hard to control online.

Lastly, online teaching and learning (PdP) method used to replace classroom
teaching is one way to adhere to the movement control order (MCO), imposed on
March 18 to break the chain of Covid-19 infections. However, the snag is that some

4
students do not have access to the Internet or may have weak connection especially
from poor families. There are students who do not have online data, and it is a
problem for families with more than one schooling child with only one handphone.
