THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT IN AN

ORGANIZATION

Basically, training refers to the process of learning the skills that an employee needs to do a
particular job or an activity. Employee development and training is the process of investing
time, energy, and resources into the improvement of company personnel. Training is given to
develop the various skills and competencies of an employee in an organization. Training is an
essential function in each and every organization which is to be taken care of by the Human
Resource Department of each and every organization. It is through training that the employee
can develop and improve their existing skill sets and which in return will increase their
productivity and employees are able to meet their organizational goals in a well-defined
manner.
There are various ways through which training is provided to employees depending upon the
method which suits the best is used to provide training to employees. The methods which can
be used are mentoring, coaching, workshops, simulation, job rotation, in basket etc. So, there
are various methods which can be used to provide training to the employees. Training is an
essential function in an organization to make the employees more productive in their work.
Here the importance of training and development will be discussed and how it can benefit the
employees of the organization along with the organization as a whole. Training can actually
help the employees to strengthen their skills and abilities which will help them to develop and
will bring them up to a level where their skills match with the skills which are required.
When training is provided to the employees it increases their performance. It gives them a
better understanding of the tasks and responsibilities which have been assigned to them and
in return it builds up their confidence. Good confidence within an employee will increase
their performance and will benefit the organization as a whole. It makes the company even
more competitive and a strong position in the market It will make the employee more self-
reliant and motivated.
So, we can also say that training is a kind of important investment upon the employees and
which also makes the employees feel that they are being valued in the organization and
attention is paid towards their growth and in return it will create a supportive environment as
they too will start valuing their company. The employees who are given the necessary
training feel even more satisfied towards their job and it increases their morale. It will
strengthen an employee and will help to overcome their weaknesses. It develops them in such
a way that they match with the specified job requirements as mentioned earlier. It also creates
a pool of knowledge and they can help their subordinates as well to overcome a particular
obstacle which they might face in their work. It leads to a sharing environment within the
organization. Training is important to bring consistency among the employees and will
increase the employees’ efficiency and productivity of work. So, when training is given it is
given in teams and in return it builds up a sense of team spirit also among the employees.
When an organization spends on the training part of employees and upskills them it will also
make them think in a more creative and an innovative way. Employees will start thinking out
of the box when their skills will be upgraded.

Another importance of training and developing the employees is that it will also lead to
decrease in the employee turnover rate in the organization. I have experienced where I was
working in an organization, the employee turnover rate was more and the reason behind it as
that no proper training was provided and when the organization started investing on training
and development of the employees the employee turnover rate fell down to a very low rate.
So, it is a kind of additional benefit to the organization. If proper training is provided good
employees can be attracted as well as retained and in return it will enhance the company
reputation and image and employees will also feel satisfied as a well-trained employee will
take more interest in their job. Because it is seen that people who usually love their jobs are
more likely to stay loyal to their organization.
Training and development are important so that the resources can also be optimized. If proper
training is not provided it will lead to wastage of various resources of the organization like
their time and money. Training is not a waste of time it is really important as it can create a
more motivated and an enthusiastic workforce. The workforce is trained to increase the
productivity and motivated so that can contribute their best towards the organization. They
will become ready to adapt to all types of changes taking place in the organization. Mainly
training is also provided an organization wants to change the status quo in the organization
and restructure in a new way. So, when new changes are brought about in the organization
training is important to be imparted and develop the employees so that they can learn new
skills and use them in a way that it increases the total efficiency.
Training is not only about the organizational productiveness. It is also important because
when an employee is given training and employee development is done it also means that it
leads to increase in the personal growth of an employee. The various development programs
provide opportunity to the employees to enhance their skills and knowledge and help them to
achieve better career growth as they learn new concepts and it upgrades their talent. It makes
them better managers and increases their managerial skills and inspire them to think and
solve the problems in a better way. It hones up their managerial skills. And as they keep on
honing their managerial skills, they start becoming better managers and through this they can
earn promotions as well. They become more confident to handle even more challenging
tasks. Their quality of work will improve. Here, when we are doing our MBA, it is also a
kind of training which we are being imparted and we can see improvements in ourselves. The
internships which we go through are also a kind of training which is making us job ready.
In this competitive world, where nothing is static, every day an innovation comes into the
market. This made the organization to be dynamic in their business process and keep on
implementing the changes so that they will be competitive in the market. So, for this training
is provided. We can say that it’s part of performance management system in the workplace.
Which is carried out when the technology changes in the market or new strategies are
implemented or change in resources or manpower or when new software or hardware are
used in the projects in these cases the employer must need to provide the training to the
employees so that they can learn and implement the same in the projects. This improves the
individual skills and increases the performance level of an organization and hence training
and development is an integral part of each and every organization. Every individual has
some shortcomings and training and development helps employees iron them out.
Refereeing to the current Covid Situation which has affected all the organizations in a very
adverse manner, has led to changes in the way training has been provided and the role of
training and development has also increased. Due to Covid the country had to go for a lock
down and maximum organizations had started working from home. The concept of working
from home is new to everyone and is a kind of change in the working environment of each
and every organization. It too required training that how the employees have to work from
home. So now the training methods have absolutely gone online rather than offline. Adapting
to the online and virtual world is a really big change in the lives of every person be it
employees or students.
The training has started taking place telephonically or through video conferencing. The
employees are given training using tools like google meet, zoom calls, skype meetings and
many more such kind of platforms. Work has gone online and people have started adapting to
this new change and it is the responsibility of every organization to train its employees
regarding their work which is to be done online through various digital portals. Whether the
training is online or offline, the importance of training and development will never change.
Rather it is going to increase as there are various technological advancements.
Also, when the lockdown started getting lifted another major challenge which came into
existence was maintain the social distancing and sanitization. It also became a part of
training. The employees had to be trained that how they have to maintain the social distance
and work in their own confined workspace. It is a kind of challenge for everyone. The
workers are to be trained at the organizational level that how they have to work in such a
situation. The training also involves to train and develop them in such a way that how the
manual work can go automated. So, the role of training is really important.
In an ever changing and fast paced corporate world, training and development is an
indispensable function. There is, enormous value in organizing proper training and
development sessions for employees. Training allows employees to acquire new skills,
sharpen existing ones, perform better, increase productivity and be better leaders.
Hence, we can say that training is really an indispensable part of every organization and
every organization should invest on it as it will give a good return to the companies.
