Lesson 3 Review:
Use Vocabulary
1. Define weathering to your own words.
Ans. For me, weathering is something that affects the Earth’s surface by the breaking of rocks. It is like a
process, a process where rocks gets dissolved by time. It can be compared to poison because it slowly
weakens its target. Like weathering, it makes the rock weaker and weaker in time, slowly like poison but the
difference is that it focuses on rocks.
2. Material transported by water, wind and ice is called sediment.
3. The opposite of deposition is erosion.
Understand Key Concepts
4. Explain why large boulders are present in steep mountain streams.
Ans. From my comprehension, large boulders can be present even in steep mountain streams because it is
too large to be affected by weathering easily, it can’t just dissolve or break down while having that kind of
weight which makes it harder for physical weathering to happen.
5. On steep slopes, gravity causes
A. chemical weathering. C. physical weathering.
B. mass wasting. D. strong winds.
Ans. B. mass wasting
6. Contrast chemical and physical weathering.
Ans. The difference between physical and chemical weathering is that physical weathering effects rocks
basically, physically, because what it does to the rock is that it breaks it down using pure force, with the
help of the changing of weathers, plants and animals, physical weathering may occur. Chemical weathering
is the process of changing the composition of the rock. It is somewhat a reaction of rocks from its
surroundings like the temperature, water and etc.
Interpret Graphics
7. Analyze what happened to the speed of the water as it rounded this bend in the river? Explain.
Ans. Because of the force coming from the process called erosion, it makes the river’s water bend like that
because wind is also a crucial part when it comes to leading the river’s direction.
8. Sequence, Put these terms in the correct sequence as they relate to the breakdown and movement of
Earth materials: rock, sediment, deposition, erosion, weathering.
Rock Weathering Sediment Erosion Deposition

Critical Thinking
9. Predict how increased temperature and precipitation would affect a mountain.
Ans. It would affect the mountain by the weathering that can happen or occur in this very mountain in which
have rocks and etc. With these process, it can change the river’s direction, influence the plant’s growth, the
size of the rocks and its composition and many more.
10. Reconstruct the ways physical and chemical weathering rounded the rocks in the lesson opener photo.
Explain how the two types of weathering interact.
Ans. According to the information I have learned about in this lesson, both have its own synergy, if one of
them isn’t present then the other would not work properly, they are like cogs that need to depend on each
other when it comes to affecting the rocks physical form and its composition. With the help of physical
weathering, the rocks becomes smaller and also multiplies while the chemical weathering makes the rocks
easier to break down then occurs the physical weathering, its like a cycle and if I were to compare it, it
would be like a video game, with the help of the warrior who attacks physically, the mage makes the rocks
weaker chemically. You can really see their teamwork when it comes to doing their jobs.
