What is food?

Food is a substance that people and animals eat, or plants absorb, to keep them alive.

E.g., Rice, chapati, curry, fruits, vegetables, cheese, bread, milk, curd, butter, etc

Ingredients
The components or materials required to prepare a food item are called as ingredients.
Examples

Boiled Rice Rice, water
Roti Flour(Atta), water
Dal Pulses, water , spices, ghee/oil, salt
Halwa Suji, sugar, water, ghee
Kheer Rice, Milk, Sugar
Idli Rice, Urad dal, Water, salt

Source of Food material or Ingredients

The main sources of our food are plants and animals.

1. Plants – We get rice, wheat, vegetables, fruits etc, from plants.


2. Animals- We get milk, curd, ghee, honey, meat, egg, fish, honey etc, from animals.

Sugar: We get sugar from sugarcane and beetroot.

Dairy Products: Products made from milk are called dairy product.

Example: Paneer, Cheese, Cream, Butter, Ghee, Curd


Sprouted Seeds/Sprouts

1. Soak seeds of moong or gram (chana) for 7-8 hours.


2. After 7-8 hours drain the water completely.
3. Now wrap these seeds in a piece of wet cloth and leave it overnight.
4. Next day we see a white structure coming out of the seeds.
Now, these seeds are called sprouted seeds or simply sprout.
Nectar: - Nectar is a sweet liquid or juice produced by flowers.

Honey: - We get honey from bees.


Bees collect nectar (sweet juices) from flowers, convert it into honey and store it in their
hive.

Herbivores:
Animals which eat only plants are called herbivores.
Example- cows, buffalo, sheep, goat, deer etc

Carnivores:
Animals which eat only animals are called carnivores.
Example- tiger, lion, snake, vulture

Omnivores:
Animals which eat both plants as well as other animals are called omnivores.
Example- Human, dog, squirrel, crow, bear etc.
