CAPACITOR TESTING

Activity No. ___

Submitted by:
CAPACITOR TESTING
Activity No. 1

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of this activity, I should be able to:

1. Identify the terminal leads of a capacitor.

2. Test a capacitor using a VOM/DMM.
3. Identify a good and bad capacitor.
4. Recognize the importance capacitor testing

II. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENTS NEEDED

3-5 pcs assorted (used &new and different types) capacitors.

Multi-tester (VOM/DMM)

III. SET-UP

Draw/show the scenario of testing a capacitor using a multi-tester. You may capture
a picture showing the same.

IV. PROCEDURES

1. Determine the terminal leads of at least five different types of capacitors.

2. Identify the type and rating (e.g. 2,200 uF/ 50V) and type (e.g. electrolytic, ceramic,
tantalum, paper) of each capacitors.
3. Test the diodes if good or bad.
4. Fill-up table in V.
V. SAMPLE DATA FOR YOUR REFERENCE

2 5pF, 50V ceramic X10KΩ 10 Ω 10 Ω shorted
3 100µF, 30V Electrolytic X10Ω OL OL open

4 10 µF, 50V mylar X1KΩ 200 kΩ 200 kΩ good
5 35pF,12V tantalum X1KΩ 70 kΩ 70 kΩ Leaky

VI. QUESTIONS

1. What is the danger when testing a capacitor? How to avoid it?

2. Proper setting of the VOM when testing

a. Small capacity capacitor
b. high capacity capacitor

3. Is it possible to identify the terminal leads and condition of a capacitor by inspection? If

yes, how? If no, why?

4. What is running capacitor? Its use and its application?

5. Brief information about capacitors use for power factor correction? Provide picture/s.
