What is ARTISTALKS?
This is a major student output in ARTS 1. It is power 10 minute informative and
enjoyable art lecture-demo. The following are expected to be present in your talk.
Reminders:
Remember, your goal is to make learning enjoyable for your audience. You
want to awaken their interest in your specialization. Therefore, READING
FROM YOUR GOOGLED TEXTS IS A NO NO! READING FROM INDEX CARDS
too as well as READING FROM LONG TEXTS IN YOUR POWERPOINT (In fact,
there shouldn’t be any long quotes in your powerpoint. You are expected to
process, condense and simplify that data. Besides, you are in character—an
expert in your field.
* ACT IT OUT. This time, you are not just a typical UPV student with a typical boring
report. THIS IS NOT A REPORT. You are an INVITED GUEST, AN ARTIST we believe
has much to share with the class. As such, do I need to emphasize that LOOK and
ACT that role. Choose from three characters:
1. you can still be you--- 10-15 years older than “my “class. The scenario is
that you are an invited guest artist to my class.
2. You can pretend to be a descendant or protégé or studying in the school
of the artist you are featuring in your 10 min talk.
3. You can take on the character of a living artist, who works in the medium
you will feature.
References: Don’t settle for one generic reference. Turn to Art books in the
library and online, academic art sites. You can even use the basic art history
sites for kids as they simplify things well. When at a loss, ask your teacher.
Use the powerpoint to support your points for discussion, not overshadow
you. Construct your own powerpoint. Do PictureTalk—no lengthy
paragraphs. Just key words and labels. If you’ve mastered your talk by heart,
those key notes will guide you throughout your 10 min. presentation. Should
you write hidden Notes, make you you are NOT READING it as you present.
No canned presentations from Slideshare and the like (that’s stealing!)
TIME. Allotment is 8-10 minutes. Points can always be condensed. The key
is having a GOOD, BALANCED outline that is EXECUTED well. How?
REHEARSE your timed presentation in front of friends, if possible. Listen to
feedback, edit, make adjustments then REHEARSE again and again if you
need to. Point deductions for overtime. 3 points for every 30 seconds.

The same objectives apply. You simply replace the visual art genres with
music /performing art topics. You may choose to focus on a specific
instrument or talk about a specific genre from the Philippines, Asia or the
West, dating back to Classical times up to the 1980s. You have a vast range
and styles to choose from. You may be more comfortable with a modern
genre but as students of the performing arts, you should be eager to learn the
basics of an older/foreign musical/performance style.
