I – OBJECTIVE

1. To layout slope staking.

II – TOOLS / EQUIPMENTS / INSTRUMENTS

Marking pins
1.

Fiber Glass tape

Marking chalk

Auto Level and tripod

Leveling Rod

III – PROCEDURE
1. Set up and orient auto level at a convenient place wherein you will be able to maximize
the number of stations and cross section points you will be able to read.
2. Take off from a given bench mark to establish your HI (height of instrument) (HI = ElBM +
BS).
3. From the first section, measure half width of the carriage way and take a rod reading to
determine the elevation of the ground (El = HI – FS).
4. Compare elevation of the edge of the carriage way versus the ground elevation, verify the
fill slope or cut slope and by ratio and proportion, determine the distance to move outward
to locate the catch point.
5. Measure the distance and take a rod reading, if elevation equals previous ground
elevation then catch point was located; if not compare current ground elevation to
previous elevation; if current is lower than previous then move outward from centerline
with a distance obtained by ratio and proportion from the fill slope or cut slope; if current is
higher than previous then move inward to centerline with a distance obtained by ratio and
proportion from the fill slope or cut slope.
6. Prepare batter board with schedule for the catch point, measure 1.5 or 2 m and drive a
stake, take a rod reading and prepare a batter board with schedule for reference stake.
7. Repeat procedure 3 to 6 for the other half of the carriage way.
8. Repeat procedure 3 to 7 for the other sections.

V. RESULTS / OBSERVATIONS
In this fieldwork we observe that in order for you to lay out a slope staking you must
have knowledge in solving this. We encounter some errors while doing the fieldwork due to
wrong distances that we made.

IX – CONCLUSION

Stakes show the cut or fill from the ground elevation at the stake to the
elevation of the finished subgrade at the road centerline or at the shoulder or other
predefined point. A “fill” marking designates the vertical distance the ground at the
stake is below the finished subgrade. Either the shoulder subgrade or the centerline
subgrade may be referenced in setting the stakes. Whichever is chosen must be
used consistently throughout the project.
