Artwork Title: Der Schrei der Natur (The Scream of Nature) or simply
The Scream
Artist: Edward Munch
Date Artwork was Created: 1893
Type of Artwork: Painting
Elements: Several elements of art are incorporated in the work of Munch
entitled “The Scream” however, there are two elements that
seem to stand out the first time you look at the painting and
these are the lines and the colors.

Munch has included a mix of horizontal, vertical, diagonal,

wavy, and swirly lines that are distinctively separated by
different colors along with its varying size and thickness.
These lines were effectively utilized in the artwork as it
creates the illusion of space and movement. As you can see
in the picture, vertical and diagonal lines were used to create
the bridge, and wavy and swirly lines were employed to
create the illusion of the sky and the sea. This variety of lines
creates a great sense of contrasts of instability, firmness, and
softness of artwork and at the same time manifests the
feelings of uneasiness due to the indistinctive unpleasant
message that it tries to convey.

On the other hand, a great play of colors can be observed

when you look at the painting. Different shades, hues, and
tints of orange, brown, blue, and black were maneuvered by
Munch to create the image that he wanted to portray. Based
on the painting, different hues of brown are used in the bridge
to create an illusion of texture and a sense of three-
dimensional space. Furthermore, the complementary colors
orange and blue make a great contrast producing a distinctive
impact between the sky and the sea. Also, in the painting,
there are some strokes of black paints after the blue ones
which seems to us that it was like a hole or an abyss from
which it was too dark and gloomy giving these feelings of
horror and distress.

All in all, the elements of art in the painting were employed

very well as it gives me a sense of discomfort, uneasiness,
horror, and other unpleasant emotions that we think the artist
has felt himself and that is something he wants to convey.
Technically speaking, the use of colors and lines was
extravagant to the point that it represented a real bridge, sky,
and sea in motion and harmony while also considering
balance.
Principles: The main principle that can be observed from the painting
“The Scream” was the emphasis. The moment that you see
the painting you will be drawn towards a man who was
screaming and due to the contrast between the man’s dark-
colored shirt and the color of his face, this makes him also
stand out. The facial expression of the man on the bridge
does not only caught the attention of the viewers but their
curiosity as well. With that curiosity in mind, the viewers tend
to search for an answer on the other portions of the painting
by literally scanning on what could have been the reason.
With that single emphasis that the painter has created, he
has pursued his viewers to appreciate the whole painting by
making them explore and analyze it more which is an
intelligent technique of delivering the artist’s message to the
audience.
