Lubricity Additives

Metalworking Additives

Lubricity Additives
Lubrizol’s metalworking lubricity additives impart enhanced lubrication properties to metalworking fluids and other specialty lubricant formulations. These products offer
critical performance characteristics to all types of metal removal and metal forming fluids. Physical boundaries provided by these additives persist between metal surfaces
during operations, reducing friction and wear. The function of these materials does not involve chemical reactions with metal surfaces (as is the case with extreme pressure
additives). This product range includes complex polymeric esters, water-soluble/emulsifiable esters, and polyalkylene glycol derivatives.

Further product details can be found on individual product data sheets and MSDSs. Contact your Lubrizol representative for more detailed guidance on product selection,
application, and performance testing.

Polymeric Esters
The SYN-ESTER™ range of polymeric ester chemistry provides exceptional film strength to lubricant formulations. The performance features of these additives can be
attributed to their high viscosity index and extreme thermal stability, allowing for the persistence of useful lubricant films to much higher temperatures than traditional esters
and fatty materials. Additionally, these products are hydrolytically stable, ashless, non-staining, low odor, and provide wetting properties that effectively deliver the lubricant
to critical metal interfaces during operations. Low iodine value (< 5) varieties offer excellent oxidative stability.

Polymeric SYN-ESTER™ additives are an excellent tool for formulators seeking to avoid the common drawbacks of traditional esters and fatty materials. These products
are inherently oil-soluble; however, many will easily incorporate into emulsion systems (additional alkaline material may be needed to balance emulsion properties) and
contribute co-emulsification and corrosion inhibition properties. In straight oil applications, the use of low iodine value SYN-ESTER™ products is recommended.

Water-Soluble/Emulsifiable Esters
The following lubricity additives include products that are inherently water soluble to some degree, or capable of easy emulsification into aqueous systems.
These materials are based on unique succinic acid, fatty acid, and vegetable oil technologies. In addition to providing strong lubricity enhancement to emulsion systems, these
products also can contribute co-emulsification and supplemental corrosion inhibition properties.

Polyalkylene Glycol Derivatives

The following polyalkylene glycol derivatives are inherently water-soluble, and provide lubricity enhancement to metal removal and metal forming fluids. Proper application of these
lubricity additives allows for the production of full synthetic oil-rejecting metalworking fluids with exceptional cooling properties, low foaming tendency, and clean operation in use.
