2ND EDITION
No magic, just logic! What if we tell you that you can easily predict what words will
be used as answers in real IELTS listening tests? You may say that if it were possible,
all candidates would get 9s. But it really IS possible! All you need to do is to carefully
analyze all the IELTS practice tests from such books as the Official Cambridge Guide,
Official Materials and the like. And you need to ask students who have taken the real
test to share some information with you. However, you don’t have to do so because
we’ve already done it for you. So, if we look at the answers in IELTS practice tests,
when you sit a real test, you will notice that many answers in the IELTS listening test
are VERY VERY basic words which you use every day. BUT these words are not as
simple as they seem, and they definitely deserve your attention! Why is it the case?
This is because IELTS creators often choose the words which are frequently misspelt.
As a result, most non-natives make mistakes in the spelling of these words because
they underestimate their importance and therefore do not spend time reviewing them.
And even among those words IELTS has its all time favourites:
1) words that have the same or almost the same pronunciation in English and your
native language (eg. an address in English and адрес (adres) in Russian or a talent
and талант (talant))
2) words containing Ss and Cs
3) words containing Js and Gs
Even when you are relaxed and not pressed for time such words as science, service,
council or resources will make you think twice before writing them down. But when
candidates are in a hurry and don’t have time to think a lot during the real test, mis-
takes are almost inevitable.
Of course, you cannot be 100% sure that only these words will be used when you
sit the test, but the probability is very high. So by learning them, you can increase the
chances of getting more correct answers.

#3 SUBJECTS
Many conversations in IELTS listening are dedicated to studies. For example, one
student asks: What is your major? The other student says: My major is Physics. And
this is the word that you should write down in your question booklet. Here is the list
of the most popular majors. Many of these words are commonly misspelt by non-
native speakers, therefore they are often used in IELTS tests as answers. The most
popular subjects in IELTS listening are Civil Engineering, Physics and Economics.
