Subaru automotive manufacturing company has enhanced corporate sustainability

through the adoption of zero-landfill operations in the car manufacturing processes. Zero landfill

is a concept which encourages companies to redesign resource life cycles with the objective of

making sure that the maximum value of the resources is well used (Subaru.co, 2016). This

approach eliminates the accumulation of waste mostly in manufacturing companies like Subaru.

Subaru has been applying the zero-landfill concept for years and this has been successful due to

the incorporation of several changes and initiatives in the production and operation processes.

One initiative that Subaru has incorporated in its processes is performing redesigning

changes in their products. The changes made on the car designs include the consideration of raw

materials that can be recycled and the elimination of toxic materials like chromium, mercury,

hexavalent and cadmium. The company has also enforced a recycling initiative whereby any

reusable waste is dismantled and crushed by the Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR) tool. Still,

Subaru’s energy-efficient production initiative has helped the company to further minimize the

high consumption of resources like water and energy. Additionally, initiatives on pollution

prevention have allowed the company to perform its part in controlling climate change by

reducing the emission of carbon dioxide by 10%. Subaru also applies innovation initiatives that

have encouraged the company to formulate innovative policies to improve in all the areas of

production management. (Subaru.co, 2016).

In conclusion, Subaru's initiatives and respective changes have helped the company to

reduce risks and cost of purchasing raw materials due to making use of every resource in the

recycling processes. The initiatives have also promoted environmental protection through the

prevention of pollution in the environment. The efforts taken by the company in waste
