Article of the day
If you call into a bank, or are interacting with banks,
insurance companies or retail media companies, you’re
often interacting with Watson Assistant behind the scenes
correctly predicting whether the sentiment of
the phrase is positive or negative. This capability
will be used by call centres and virtual assistants
across a range of industries to better predict
what customer enquiries are about and triage
responses.

Single‐ended Amplifier is Susceptible to
Noise
vr
Assume
no input vr
signal
What kind of amplifier is being used?
What is vout?
Why there is humming noise when there is no input?
SJSU, EE124‐01 SPRING 2020, HIU YUNG WONG 7
Solution: Output: Don’t reference the
signal to ground but do it Differentially
Define Vout = Vx‐Vy
When there is NO inputs
Do we still have humming noise if applied to
audio amplifier?
This is just to avoid VDD noise. Is there any gain?

Solution: Input: Applied Differentially

Solution: Input: Applied Differentially
(include the noise)
Since this is small signal and the circuit is linearized, we can treat
each small signal independently and then add the effects

More Properties of Differential Signals
There are two signals
◦ going in opposite direction by the same amount
◦ no necessarily sinusoidal
◦ They have the same average DC value (common mode (CM))
◦ They see the same impedance
What is the Differential Signal Peak amplitude?
What is the differential signal peak‐to‐peak amplitude?
Numerical example: What is the common mode level?

Differential Pair
M1 and M2 are identical
Assume differential signal is applied to Vin1 and
Vin2
There is an extra tail current ISS. Why? This is to
reduce the common mode gain in non‐ideal
cases. Detailed later.
Questions:
If Vin1 = Vin2, what is the values of IDS1 and IDS2?
Sketch the input and output signals in the Figure
