Article of the Day
ReRAM, MRAM, and PCRAM as the three key emerging
memories
FRAM has proven itself in specific markets such as mass
transit cards, gaming systems, and power meters, with
its primary appeal being its low power consumption
when performing write operations.
FRAM has the lowest switching energy
radiation tolerant
Scaled with CMOS achieve a read and write in the order of 10 to 15 nanoseconds while being
close to achieving retention for as long as ten years at 85 degrees

What did we learn in the last lecture?
We reviewed Bode Plot’s rules What is the mid‐band gain?
Finding frequency response of an amplifier is as simple as solving KVL and KCL

New Method: How to find Poles Quickly?
Instead of deriving small signal models and find the transfer function, we can do this by
inspection
Steps:
1. Each node along the signal path is associated with a pole
2. Set all independent source to 0
3. Find the equivalent C to ground from that node
4. Find the equivalent R to ground from that node
5. |Pole| associated with that node: |p| = 1/RC

Floating Capacitance
Can we use this
method?
How about transform it to capacitor(s)
connected to ground?

Miller Theorem (1)
SJSU, EE124‐01 SPRING 2020, HIU YUNG WONG 10
Miller Theorem (2)
If ZF is due to
capacitance, what is
the equivalent
capacitance?
SJSU, EE124‐01 SPRING 2020, HIU YUNG WONG 11
Miller Capacitance
A B
Explain it intuitively

Example and Miller Approximation
Use Miller Theorem to find the pole
Why this is an approximation (Miller Approximation)?
Results in additional pole and elimination of zero
The gain used in calculating Miller cap is assumed to be constant!
