If you have difficulty in understanding the materials due to online class, please feel free
to schedule Zoom session outside office hours.
We will have mid‐term 2 on 4/15 as scheduled using online. We will use
Respondus LockDown Browser + Webcam
Please make sure you have internet access and Webcam. If you don’t have, please let me
know early enough. I will find resources for you in the school.

Poles and Zeros (Review)
Transfer function: how output is related to input, e.g. H(s) = Vout(s)/Vin(s)
𝑠 𝑠
1 1 ⋯ 𝑠 𝜔 𝑠 𝜔 ⋯
𝜔 𝜔
𝐻 𝑠 𝐴 𝐻 𝑠 𝐴

𝜔 𝜔
Pole is obtained by setting denominator to zero
Zero is obtained by setting numerator to zero
Poles: p1, p2, … What are the poles and zeros of the following functions?
Zeros: z1, z2, … Vout ( s ) 1 Vout ( s ) 1
Vin ( s ) 1 sR1C1 Vin ( s ) R1C1s

New Method: How to find Poles Quickly?
Instead of deriving small signal models and find the transfer function, we can do this by
inspection
Steps:
1. Each node along the signal path is associated with a pole
2. Set all independent source to 0 or open
3. Find the equivalent C to ground from that node
4. Find the equivalent R to ground from that node
5. |Pole| associated with that node: |p| = 1/RC
