ME3421- Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

Student ID NAME MARKS

A simplified sketch of an air conditioning ductwork is as shown in the above diagram. In addition
to the information shown on the sketch, other data on the main and branch duct are given below:
For the main duct: A to G.
Velocity of air flow at A = 10 m/s
Length of AB = Length F’G =8m
Length of B’C= Length of C’D = Length of D’E= Length of E’F = 4 m each.
All the duct in the main duct (A to G) have the same friction rate =1.0 Pa/m
The loss factor for the elbow in F’G = 0.35
Static Regain Factor of each of the offtake = 0.70 each.
Static pressure at G = 6 mm of water
ASSIGNMENT ME3421

For the Branch duct: L to K.

Velocity of air flow at L = 6 m/s
Length of LH= Length of HI = Length of IJ = 4 m each.
Length of JK =8m
The loss factor for the elbow in JK = 0.35
Static Regain Factor of each of the offtake = 0.70 each.
Static pressure at K = 2.54 mm of water

Task:
For the Main Duct.
 Design the duct using Static Regain Method.
 Determine the static pressure and total pressure at point A.
 Tabulate your calculated results as shown below: Round up all the duct diameter to the
nearest 10mm.

Pressure Velocity
Flow rate Velocity Friction rate Diameter
Section Loss Pressure
( m3/s ) ( m/s ) (Pa/m) ( mm )
( Pa ) ( Pa )

For the Branch Duct.

 Design the duct using Equal Friction Method.
 Determine the static pressure and total pressure at point L.
 Tabulate your calculated results as shown below: Round up all the duct diameter to the
nearest 10mm.

Pressure Velocity
Flow rate Velocity Friction rate Diameter
Section Loss Pressure
( m3/s ) ( m/s ) (Pa/m) ( mm )
