1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Authorization

This feasibility report is prepared on the request made by the Deputy General Manager
(Sabaragamuwa) in order to supply safe drinking water to Warakapola town and suburb areas.

1.2 Objective and Scope

The main objective of the proposed water supply project is to provide safe and reliable
drinking water in adequate quantity to the inhabitant living in the 58 GNDs of Warakapola
Divisional Secretariat Division and 2 GNDs of Galigamuwa Divisional Secretariat Division.

Scope of the Project is to provide safe pipe borne water through construction of new intake
well at Thulhiriya (Ma Oya source), construction of 16,000 m3/day capacity full treatment
plant, installation of pumps at intake well, supply and laying of DI raw water transmission
main, construction 4 numbers of ground reservoirs and laying of 156 km distribution network.

1.3. General Description of the Project area

GNDs of Warakapola DSD and Galigamuwa DSD are located beside the Kandy-Colombo
road and Ruwanwella Warakapola Road. The average rainfall of the area is 2493 mm and the
average temperature is 270C. Elevation of the project area varies from 50-320 m.
The total population of the project area in 2017 according to Sampath Pathikada detail is
99,755. In the project area there are Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burgur, Malay and other
(according to the Sampath Pathikada details).
A commercial area like Warakapola town is highly beneficiaries from this project.
Warakapola town is highly populated and rapidly developing town which situated along the
Kandy Colombo road. Ambepussa junction which gives access to Kegalle, Kurunegala and
Ruwanwella also situated near the Warakapola town.

1.4 Implementation of the Feasibility Study

This feasibility study was carried out by the Planning and co-ordination division of Regional
Support Centre (Sabaragamuwa).

This study was started on 2019 May to update the previously done feasibility report as it has
been carried out about 10 years ago.
Field visits were carried out time to time to identify project area, possible water sources and
possible lands for the treatment plant.
Water quality tests were conducted in order to find out the suitability of the water source and
to define a treatment process for the raw water.
