Simple Tenses

● Simple Present Tense


○ Uses:
■ For habits
He drinks tea at breakfast.
■ For repeated actions or events
It rains every afternoon in the hot season.
■ For general truths
The Earth revolves around the Sun.
■ For instructions or directions
Open the packet and pour the contents into hot water.
■ For fixed arrangements
His mother arrives tomorrow.
■ With future constructions
We'll give it to her when she arrives.

● Simple Past Tense


○ Uses:
■ Actions finished in the past
I watched TV yesterday
■ Habits in the past
He played the piano
■ Durations in the past
We waited for two hours.
■ Series of completed actions
I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.
■ An indefinite point in time
People lived in caves a long time ago.

● Simple Future Tenses


○ Uses:
■ To predict future event
It will rain tomorrow
■ To express willingness:
I will do the washing-up

■ With I or We, to express a spontaneous decision


I will pay for the clothes by credit card
■ To express unwillingness
I won’t leave until I’ve seen you
■ With I in the interrogative form using "shall", to make an offer:

Shall I open the door?

■ With we in the interrogative form using "shall", to make a suggestion:


Shall we go to the restaurant tonight?
■ With I in the interrogative form using "shall", to ask for advice or
instructions:
What shall I tell the teacher about this money?

■ With you, to give orders:


You will do exactly as I say.
■ With you in the interrogative form, to give an invitation:
Will you marry me?

Perfect Tenses

● Present Perfect
○ Uses:
■ Actions started in the past and continuing the the present
We have had the same style for a long time.
■ When the time period referred to has not finished
It has rained a lot this month
■ Actions repeated in an unspecified period between the past and now
They have visited him frequently
■ Actions completed in the very recent past (+just)
I have just finished my assignment
■ When the precise time of the action is not important of not known
He has studied Pre-Calculus

● Past Perfect
○ Uses:
■ Finished action before a second point in the past
When we arrived, the film had started.
■ Action that started in the past and continued to another action in the past
On the 20th of July, I had worked here for three months.
■ Unreal or imaginary things in the past
I wish I hadn’t gone to bed so late!

● Future Perfect
○ Uses
■ To talk about an action that will finish before a certain time in the future
By eight o’clock tomorrow, I will have taken off for Japan.
■ To talk about an action that will be completed before another event takes
place

She will have learnt Chinese before she moves to China.


■ To express an action which began before and will continue up until
another action in the future
By the next week,we will have been married for 20 years.
