TASK 4: INTRO TO STYLISTICS

I. Instruction: Explain the following in 2-3 sentences.

1. Foregrounding theory
 It is an emphasis on a textual feature, may be achieved through
unusual or strange collocations, meaningful repetition, contrast,
deliberate deviation from the norms, rules and conventions. It is the
practice of making something stand out from the surrounding words or
images and it make use of unusual words. It can also be achieved
through the use of figure of speech.

2. Diegesis vs. Mimesis


 Diegesis is telling or narrating something while mimesis is showing
something. Mimesis is derived from the Ancient word “ imitation” or
“representation” describing the process of imitation or mimicry through
which artist portray and interpret the world and it’s a way of thinking
about a work of art. Diegesis is telling of a story by a narrator who
summarizes events in the plot and comments conversations, thoughts,
characters and others and a sphere or world in which these narrated
events occurs.

4. Speech act
 The theory that many utterances are significant not so much in terms
of what they say but rather in terms of what they do. It is a type of act
that can be performed by speaker meaning that one is doing so or is
something expressed by an individual that not only presents
information, but performs an action as well.
