Skill 3: Be Careful of Appositive (Perhatikan penggunaan dan posisi Appositive)

Appositive dapat menjadi pengecoh dalam mengetahui subjek pada sebuah kalimat dalam tes TOEFL
bagian structure. Appositive merupakan sebuah kata benda yang datang setelah kata benda lainnya
yang mempunyai arti sama.

Sally, the best student in the class, got an A on the exam.

Pada contoh di atas "Sally" merupakan subjek dari kalimat dan "the best student in the class" dapat
dikenali dengan mudah sebagai appositive karena terdapat koma yang memisahkan. Yang dimaksud
dari "the best student in the class" merupakan Sally juga, jadi ke duanya sama saja.

kalimat. George merupakan appositive. Olehnya jawaban yang kita butuhkan yaitu sebuah subject
untuk melengkapi kalimat di atas. Right now (adverb), happily (adverb), dan because of the time
(adverb) tidaklah bisa menjadi subjek. Jadi, jawaban yang paling tepat yaitu bagian d -my friend
(noun).

setelah subject kalimat. Jadi yang kita butuhkan dalam kalimat diatas yaitu sebuah appositive yang
sama dengan Sarah. Pada jawaban b dan c terdapat kata keja "is" sehingga bukanlah bentuk

Appositiove merupakan sebuah kata benda (noun) yang datang setelah ataupun sebelum
sebuah noun yang lainnya. Appositive biasanya bisa dikenali dengan posisi koma yang
mengapitnya atau setelahnya. Contoh kalimat:

Tom merupakan sebuah noun yang berfungsi sebagai subject kalimat. "A really good mechanic"
