LESSON NOTE FORMAT FOR 2013 ACADEMIC YEAR

TEACHER’S NAME: SAMUEL MEKONEN SUBMISSION DATE: 27/01/2013

SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS WEEK: THREE

GRADE & SECTION: 10 PAGES: 261 - 262

CHAPTER/UNIT: 6/ PLANE GEOMETRY PERIOD/WEEK: 3

TOPICS: PERIMETER OF A REGULAR POLYGON

LESSON OBJECTIVE/S: AT THE END OF THIS LESSON THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE
TO DETERMINE THE PERIMETER OF A REGULAR POLYGON.

SUMMARISED NOTE

The perimeter P of a regular polygon with side ‘S’ and radius ‘r’ is given by: P = 2nrSin

where n is number of sides of the polygon. In short, P = nS, where S = 2rsin .

Example: The perimeter of a regular hexagonal polygon is 24units, then calculate its radius and
side length.

Solution:

P = nS → S = = = 4units

r= = 4units.

Exercise:

1. If a square ABCD inscribed in a circle of radius r with 10cm long is given, then find the
perimeter of the square.
2. Prove that the perimeter of an equilateral triangle inscribed in a circle of radius r is
P = 3√ r units.
3. Find the length of a side of a regular hexagon with a radius 12units.
SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS WEEK: THREE

GRADE & SECTION: 10 PAGES: 263 - 264

CHAPTER/UNIT: 6/ PLANE GEOMETRY PERIOD/WEEK: 3

TOPICS: AREA OF A REGULAR POLYGON

LESSON OBJECTIVE/S: AT THE END OF THIS LESSON THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE
TO DETERMINE THE AREA OF A REGULAR POLYGON.

SUMMARISED NOTE

An apothem of a regular polygon is a segment from its center perpendicular to one of its sides.

Its length is given by: a = rCos , where r is the radius and n number of sides of the polygon.

The area A of a regular polygon with perimeter P and apothem ‘a’ is given by:

A = a.P = Sin

Example: If a regular polygon of 12 sides with radius 4units long is given, find its area.

Solution:

A= Sin

= (12)( ) Sin

= 48 Sq. units

Exercise

1. Prove that the area of a square inscribed in a circle of radius r is A = 2 .

2. If the side length of inscribed regular pentagon is 16cm long, then find the area.
3. The apothem of inscribed regular hexagon is 8cm. Then determine the radius and area.
4. If the perimeter of an inscribed equilateral triangle is 84cm, then calculate its area.

TOPICS: FURTHER ON PERIMETER AND AREA OF REGULAR POLYGONS

LESSON OBJECTIVE/S: AT THE END OF THIS LESSON THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE
TO DETERMINE THE AREA AND PERIMETER OF A REGULAR POLYGON.

SUMMARISED NOTE

You have seen how to determine the perimeter and area of regular polygons. Today, you are
going to solve problems based on the example given below.

Example: If the area of inscribed regular hexagon is 18√ , then find the

a) radius,

b) Side,

c) Apothem and

d) Perimeter.

Solution:

a) A = Sin

18√ Sin

r = 2√ cm

b) S = 2rsin = 2(2√ )(Sin )

S = 2√ cm
c) a = rCos
= 2√ Cos

= 3cm

d) P = nS or P = 2nrSin
= 6(2√ ) ………………………….. S = r (For a regular hexagon)
= 12√ cm
