Progress Report on Teaching Remedial Math

I. INTRODUCTION
In most classrooms, there will be at least one student needs remediation in math. This is a
situation every teacher faces and the methods and strategies detailed in lesson that will help
teacher effectively and for students.
The goal of remedial math is to dramatically reduce the number of students who have
extreme difficulty mastering the skills and concepts of mathematical reasoning and computation.
Remedial math is a highly effective short-form intervention of tutoring in both individualized and
small group setting students who are struggling with math. Remedial math teachers are the
experts in their content area who work closely with students and design prescriptive and strategic
instruction to address individual student’s needs. It also means that the teacher will be working
with students who might be missing foundation skills that are required for learning higher level
concepts.
Remedial instruction is the process of providing help to students who are experiencing
difficulties so that they can understand and master the concept with which they are struggling. In
math, each concept is the foundation for new learning, and when a student has not mastered one
concept they are unable to move on to the next concept. In this case, remediation helps to get the
student back on track so they can continue their learning on the math continuum.

II. OBJECTIVES
1. Increase the mathematical ability of identified poor grade 7 learners in computing
numbers and set of operations.
2. Improve the mastery skills, symbols, notation and concepts of mathematics.

III. MATERIALS/RESOURCES/PERSON INVOLVE

o School head
o Teachers
o Poor learners
o Parents
o Workbook, activity sheets, flash cards, algebra tile/signed tiles

IV. IMPLEMENTATION/ACTIVITIES/OBSERVATION
First day of meeting, the grade 7 students were asked to answer the readiness test and
later find observation of the mathematical computation of students. The objective of the
program/ activity is to determine and identify the students who have extreme difficulty
mastering the skills and concepts of mathematical reasoning and computation. It showed that
some of students have difficulty in operations of numbers and comprehension of mathematical
problems. Those identified poor grade 7 students in math were exposed to different
mathematical computation and worksheets activity to improve and develop their skills in math
subject. Individual and group varied activities and practice skills were also given to them. There
were selected grade 7-A students who assists their activities and follow-up their computation
ability on fundamental operation to ensure their progress.
V. SUMMARY/CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

The conduct of the Remedial Math Program for the school year 2017-2018 is indeed a
success. The students were given additional time to enhance their mathematical skills and engage
them with variety of activities together with their group assigned. It helps the struggling learners
shore up their basic skills. This extra support can help them catch up to their peers. And
sometimes, if a student’s group in learning aren’t related to a disability, it can eliminate the need
for referral to special class. With this experiences, we, educators developed interest, loyalty and
perseverance to teach our students, develop their potentials and reduce number of students who
have extreme difficulty mastering the skills and concepts of mathematical reasoning and
computation.

Conclusion:
Teacher should design appropriate learning activities in line with the focus of teaching.
On the basis of low starting point, small step, diversified activities and instant feedback, teachers
should encourage students to participate actively during the learning process to help master the
skills and methods of collaborating learning. Diversified learning activities may help students
enhance their interest in learning, stimulate their thinking and reinforce the effectiveness of
learning.
Teachers should exercise their discretion in the appropriate use of teaching aids.
Appropriate teaching aids not only help to enhance student’s interest in learning but will also
consolidate the knowledge they learned, thus achieving the objective of teaching. When designing
and using teaching aids, teachers should first consider their practical use and uses whether the
aim of remedial teaching can be attained.

The design and organization of teaching materials should be student-oriented. They

should be selected and collated systematically to serve the purpose.

Remedial teaches hold meetings regularly to evaluate the effectiveness of work and
gather opinion for reinforcement. Remedial teaches may train up students who perform better in a
certain subject.

Recommendation
1. Teaching remedial math must hold meetings regularly with varied worksheet
activities and games.
2. Encourage parents to be a part of the Remedial Math Program through full
support and cooperation for the progress of their children.
3. Math teachers must have enough knowledge about the students interests and
skills to understand the behavior of the learners and helps and guide them in an
appropriate way to manipulate numbers and perform set of operations.
