woman who gets no one to support her. Her two daughters are married and their husbands
support her at times which is very insufficient for her livelihood. She is currently living in a
room of one of her relatives temporarily. Last year, she was successful in goat rearing and
earned some money. But, currently, she has no permanent work to do and she works in
different houses as a housemaid. She expresses her will to rear cattle and some support so that
she has a permanent living place.

4 Problems Identified:

1. Financial problems. Her monthly income is barely 1500 to 2000 BDT which is
insufficient to provide herself with food and clothing.
2. She sometimes passes her days without meals.
3. She does not have a permanent dwelling place.
4. She is out of normal life.

5 Challenges to solve the problems:

 Poverty is a vicious cycle and it is not possible to eradicate it in a very short period.
 Lack of education is a major challenge.
 Local people don’t want to lend her money.
 She does not have social security as she has no family now.

6 Initiatives

To ensure her livelihood, an application was submitted to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer urging
for her inclusion in the social safety net program as well as providing her with some funds so
that she can rear cattle for her livelihood.

7 Recommendations

Chayna Begum is interested in cattle rearing(mainly cow) for her earning. She should be
brought under some social safety net program from the Department of Social Welfare, but the
urgent need of her is to have some funding for buying cattle(cow and calf) and a home under
‘Ashrayan Prakalpa.’
