I give students a little survey that asks questions about them in the first class meeting. I think it’s a great way for me to get to know the students a little more, because I only have so much time with them, so it’s helpful for me to get some information about them.
Evidence In the virtual
environment this trimester, I got the idea from my sister to ask students to create a “virtual locker” that has pictures about their lives. I ask them to elaborate on the pictures as well. I also shared my own prior to asking them to create one, so that also helps them to get to know me a little better. On one of the questions that I ask in the survey, I specifically ask what students do in times of adversity. I explain that challenges and obstacles will always be something that students will encounter, so it is important to change Evidence their mindset about it now. This helps to teach them grit and how to learn from their mistakes, so they are able to bounce back and take it as a learning situation if they don’t get the results that they wanted. I give examples of other athletes/celebrities and entrepreneurs that have gone through adversity and speak to my own experiences, so as to encourage students to learn from failures, Evidence mistakes, and setbacks. Throughout the other classes in the trimester, I keep referring back to taking chances and risks, and learning how to bounce back from not-so-ideal outcomes. I use video clips to show different stories of people, I use breakout rooms to have students engage in small group discussions, and I ask students to chat/message me during meetings if Evidence they don’t feel comfortable in sharing during class. I also take surveys at the end of class to have students give some sort of input about the video/topic that was discussed. I ask students questions on how they can relate physical activity in their lives. I ask them to reflect on their current lifestyle and see if they are able to implement more exercise in their Evidence routines if they do not, or how to be more efficient with their time if they are already exercising. I use some of the comments from the surveys to help me in checking for understanding. It also allows students to ask questions that normally don’t feel as comfortable in speaking to give their Evidence input. I respond to each student individually if there is something more pressing to share with them, and I usually follow up with the whole class in an email about the comments I read. (9/16/20)
