 Everyone knows that the elephant
has a very long nose.
 གླང་བོ་ཆེ་ལ་སྣ་ཤིན་ཏུ་རིང་པོ་

ཞིག་ཡོད་པ་མི་ཚང་མས་ཧ་གོ་བ་

རེད།

 But a long time ago, the elephant’s nose
was short and fat. Like a shoe in the middle
of its face.
 ཡིན་ན་ཡང་། གནའ་སྔ་མོའི་དུས་

སུ་གླང་བོ་ཆེའི་སྣ་ནི། ཐུང་ཐུང་

རྒྱགས་རིལ་ཞིག་ཡིན། སྣ་དེ་ནི་ངོ་

གདོང་གི་དཀྱིལ་དུ་ལྷམ་ཞིག་དང་

འདྲ་བོ་ཡིན།

 One day a baby elephant was born. She was
curious about everything. She had a question
for every animal.
 ཉི ན ་ཞི ག ་ལ། གླང་ཆེ ན ་གྱི ་ ཕྲུ་གུ་

ཞིག་སྐྱེས་ཤིང་། དེས་ཡོད་ཚད་ཤེས་

ན་འདོད། གླང་ཕྲུག་དེ་ལ་སྲོག་ཆགས་

ཚར་མར་དྲི་བ་རེ་འདྲི་རྒྱུ་ཡོད།

 She was curious about Giraffe.
“Why do you have a long neck?”
she asked.
 གླང་ཕྲུག་གི ས ་ཤ་བ་སྐེ ་ རི ང ་གི ་

སྐོ ར ་ཤེ ས ་ན་འདོ ད ་དེ ། “ཁྱོ ད ་ལ་

སྐེ་རིང་པོ་ཞིག་ཡོད་དོན་ཅི་ཡིན།”

ཞེས་དྲིས།

 She was curious about Rhino. “Why does
your horn have a sharp point?”
 གླང་ཕྲུག་གིས་རི་དྭགས་བསེ་རུའི་

སྐོར་ཤེས་ན་འདོད་དེ། “ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་རྭ་

ཅོའི་རྩེ་རྣོ་བོ་ཡིན་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཅི་

ཡིན།” ཞེས་དྲིས།

  She was curious about Hippo. “Why do
you have red eyes?” she asked.
 གླང་ཕྲུག་གིས་ཆུ་རྟའི་སྐོར་ཤེས་

ན་འདོད་དེ། “ཁྱོད་ལ་མིག་དམར་

པོ་ཡོད་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཅི་ཡིན།”

ཞེས་དྲིས།

 And she was VERY curious about Croco-
dile. “What does Crocodile eat for dinner?”
she asked.
  གླང་ཕྲུག་གིས་ཆུ་སྲིན་མཆུ་རིང་

གི ་ སྐོ ར ་ཧ་ཅང་ཤེ ས ་ན་འདོ ད ་དེ །

“ཆུ་སྲིན་མཆུ་རིང་གིས་དགོང་ཟས་

ལ་ཅི་ཞིག་ཟའམ།” ཞེས་དྲིས།

 “Never ask a question like that!”
said her mother. Then she walked
off, frowning.
 གླང་ཆེན་ཨ་མས། “འདི་ལྟ་བུའི་

དྲི་བ་ཞིག་ནམ་ཡང་མ་འདྲི།” ཞེས་

བཤད་ནས་སྨིན་མ་སྡུད་བཞིན་

ཆས་སོང་།

 Quickly Crow flew down to baby elephant.
“Follow me to the river. There you will see
what Crocodile eats for dinner,” squawked
Crow.
  ཅང་མ་འགོར་བར། ཁྭ་ཏ་གླང་

ཕྲུག་གི་འགྲམ་ལ་ཕུར་ནས་ཡོང་

སྟེ། “ངའི་རྗེས་དེད་ནས་གཙང་བོའ་ི

འགྲམ་ལ་ཤོག་དང་། དེ་རུ་ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་

ཆུ་སྲིན་མཆུ་རིང་གིས་དགོང་ཟས་

ལ་ཅི་ཞིག་ཟ་བ་མཐོང་གི་རེད།”

ཅེས་བཤད།

 So the baby elephant followed
Crow down to the river.
  དེ ར ་བརྟེ ན ། གླང་ཕྲུག་ཁྭ་ཏའི ་

རྗེས་དེད་ནས་གཙང་བོའི་འགྲམ་དུ་

སོང་།

 She walked through the reeds and finally
reached the bank. She looked into the water.
Where was Crocodile?
  གླང་ཕྲུག་འདམ་རྩྭ་བརྒྱུད་ནས་

སོང ་བའི ་ མཐར་གཙང་འགྲམ་དུ་

འབྱོར། གླང་ཕྲུག་གིས་ཆུའི་ནང་ལ་

བལྟས། ཡིན་ན་ཡང་། ཆུ་སྲིན་མཆུ་

རིང་མ་མཐོང་།

 “Hello,” said a stone near the river bank.
“Hello,” said Baby Elephant. “Can you
tell me what Crocodile eats for dinner?”
she asked.
 གཙང་འགྲམ་དུ་རྡོ་ཞིག་གིས། “ཝ་

ཡེ།” ཞེས་བཤད་པ་དང་། གླང་ཕྲུག་

གིས་ཀྱང་། “ཝ་ཡེ” ཞེས་བཤད། དེ་

ནས། “ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ཆུ་སྲིན་མཆུ་རིང་

གིས་དགོང་ཟས་ལ་ཅི་ཞིག་ཟ་བ་ང་

ལ་བཤད་ཐུབ་བམ།” ཞེས་དྲིས།

 “Bend down and I will tell you,” said
the stone. “Lower, lower,” said the stone.
So Baby Elephant bent down lower,
and lower.
  རྡོ་དེ་ཡིས། “མར་སྒུར་དང་། ངས་

ཁྱོད་ལ་བཤད།” ཅེས་སྨྲས། “ད་དུང་

མར་སྒུར་དང་།” ཞེས་རྡོ་ཡིས་བཤད་

པས། གླང་ཕྲུག་ད་དུང་མར་བསྒུར།

  Then suddenly, “Snap!” Baby Elephant’s
nose was caught in Crocodile’s jaws.
“Crocodile will eat you for dinner!”
squawked Crow, and flew away.
 དེ ་ ནས། གློ ་ བུར་དུ་ཅལ་སྒྲ་ཞི ག ་

གྲག་པ་དང་། གླང་ཕྲུག་གི་སྣ་ནི། ཆུ་

སྲིན་མཆུ་རིང་གི་ཁ་ནང་དུ་བཟུང་

འདུག

ཁྭ་ཏས་གླང་ཕྲུག་ལ། “ཆུ་སྲི ན ་

མཆུ་རིང་གིས་ཁྱོད་དགོང་ཟས་སུ་

བཟའ་རྒྱུ་རེ ད །” ཅེས་བཤད་ནས་

ཕུར་སོང་།

  Baby Elephant sat back on her strong
legs and pulled. She pulled, and pulled.
But Crocodile did not let go of her nose.
 གླང་ཕྲུག་ནི་རང་གི་རྐང་པ་ཤུགས་

ཆེ ན ་པོ ་ གཉི ས ་ཀྱི ་ ཐོ ག ་ནས་མར་

བསྡད་དེ ། རང་གི་ སྣ་འཐེན། གླང་

ཕྲུག་གིས་ཇི་ཙམ་འཐེན་ཡང་། ཆུ་

སྲིན་མཆུ་རིང་གིས་གླང་ཕྲུག་གི་སྣ་

མ་བཏང་།

 Baby Elephant’s nose stretched, and
stretched, and stretched. Then, “Thud!”
she fell on her back.
  གླང་ཕྲུག་གི ་ སྣ་ནི ། འཐེ ན ་ནས་

ཇེ་རིང་ནས་ཇེ་རིང་དུ་གྱུར། དེ་ནས།

རྡིག་སྒྲ་དང་བཅས་གླང་ཕྲུག་གན་

 Crocodile sunk back into the water.
He was cross about losing his dinner.
  ཆུ་སྲིན་མཆུ་རིང་ནི་ཕྱིར་ཆུ་ནང་

དུ་ནུབ་སོང་། དགོང་ཟས་ཁ་ནས་

ཤོར་བས་ཆུ་སྲིན་མཆུ་རིང་ཁོང་ཁྲོ་

ལངས་འདུག

 Baby Elephant looked at her nose. It was
stretched very long. She could not see where
it ended! The other elephants decided to call
it trunk.

དེ ་ འཐེ ན ་ནས་ཤི ན ་ཏུ་རི ང ་པོ ་

ཆགས་ཡོད་པས། གླང་ཕྲུག་གིས་རང་

གི་སྣ་ཡི་རྩེ་མོ་མ་མཐོང་། གླང་བོ་ཆེ་

གཞན་དག་གིས་དེ་ལ་སྣ་ཞགས་ཞེས་

འབོད་པའི་ཐག་བཅད།

 Her trunk was so long she could pick
fruit from high branches.
 གླང་ཕྲུག་གི་ སྣ་ཞགས་ནི་ ཤིན་

ཏུ་རིང་པོ་ཡིན་སྟབས། དེས་ཡལ་

ག་མཐོན་པོ་ཐོག་གི་ཤིང་ཏོག་ཀྱང་

འཐོག་ཐུབ།

 Her nose was so long she could shower
her back with water. From that day, all
elephants had long and useful trunks.

ལ་རིང་ཞིང་བཀོལ་སྤྱོད་ཆེ་བའི་སྣ་
