● Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
● Recognize and produce initial consonant blends.

Materials
● Whiteboard
● Markers
● Ending sound worksheet
● Consonst r roll and read.

Introduction.
● The teacher will introduce the lesson by saying “Yesterday, we learned about consonant
R blends. When we see letters like cr, br, tr, pr, wr, gr and dr. When we see the consonant
and the letter R they blend together but we can hear each individual sound. If I take my
hands and hold them up, my one hand represents the letter c my other hand represents the
letter r. You can hear both sounds by themselves, but the flow together.” The teacher will
say. /c/ /r/ and then blend them together.
● The teacher will say “Lets practice writing and saying some r blend words. Can everyone
get out their whiteboard?”
Development
● The teacher will say “let's start with cr.” There are pictures of words that start with cr.
The students will say the word. And write it on their whiteboard. Then they will spell it
out.
○ crab, crack, crib,
● Now lets practice with our blend with the letters tr. Together these letters make the
sounds /t/ /r/. Let's figure out our pictures and write them down together.”
○ Truck, tree, trap,
● “Our next blend is wr. Let's look at our pictures and write our words. Together they make
the sounds /w/ /r/”
○ Wrap, wreck
● “Our final blend we are going to practice today is pr. These letters blended make the
sounds /p/ /r/”
○ Prop, price
● “You all did a great job writing those words! Now it’s your turn! We are going to do a
fun activity. Once you get your paper put your hands on your head.” The students will be
doing a What’s the Word worksheet.
● Once the students receive the worksheet and are ready for the directions. “We are going
to be doing an activity called ‘what's the word?’ You can see there are pictures and the
words below it are only half filled in. You need to add the correct blend in the front of the
word. I will have the blends on the screen for all of you. Look at the picture, say the word
and figure out which sounds you hear when you say the word. After that write the word.
When you are finished you may color the pictures.”
● If the students all finish and have extra time, I have a few other r blend activities they
could do that help them to practice.
Closure
● The teacher will say “ Remember boys and girls. If we want to become super readers, we
need to be able to read all sorts of words. We are becoming super star readers, and now
we can read words like trick and crab. Yay!”
● The teacher will close the lesson.
