Using of Analytics to Provide Corona Virus Updates

(People’s Republic of Italy)

An ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel infectious

disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Its first
case was reported on December 31 2019, and the source of the outbreak has been linked to a
wet market in Wuhan (Hubei province, China). Human-to-human and patient-to-medical staff
transmission of the virus have been confirmed. Many of the associated fatalities have been due
to pneumonia caused by the virus. Cases of the virus have been confirmed in numerous
countries and territories worldwide. Virus-screening and quarantining measures are being
implemented at airports worldwide, as well as extensive travel restrictions. On March 11, the
World Health Organization (WHO) declared the global outbreak a pandemic.
COVID 19 was first confirmed to have spread to Italy on January 31 2020, when two Chinese
tourists in Rome tested positive for the virus. One week later an Italian man repatriated back to
Italy from the city of Wuhan, China, was hospitalized and confirmed as the third case in Italy. A
cluster of cases was later detected, starting with 16 confirmed cases in Lombardy on 21st of
February, and 60 additional cases and first deaths on 22nd of February. By the beginning of
March, the virus had spread to all regions of Italy. On the 30th of January, the government of
Italy already suspended all the flights to and from China and have declared state of emergency.
While on the 8th of March 2020, Italy’s prime minister Giuseppe Conte extended the quarantine
to the entire region of Lombardy and 14 other northern provinces, and right on to the next day,
they already imposed quarantine to the entire country of Italy.
On March 11, 2020, Prime Minister Conte prohibited almost all commercial activities except for
supermarkets and pharmacies where essential necessities are being bought and closes all non-
essential businesses and industries, with restrictions to movement of people on March 21, 2020.
On March 17, Italian authorities announced that all Italian nationals entering the country from
abroad would be subject to a mandatory self-isolation period of 14 days. Those who enter Italy
for valid working reasons and leave the country within 72 hours are exempt from the policy.
Under the lockdown measures, Prime Minister Conte is advising all individuals in the country to
stay at home. Public gatherings remain suspended nationwide; all are advised to work from
home and respect an interpersonal distance of 1 m (3ft). On March 22, Italian officials
announced a ban on all domestic travel. Exceptions have been made for necessary work or
health-related reasons. It remains unclear how long the ban will remain in effect.
As of March 28, death toll in Italy already rose to more than 10,000 as 889 people reportedly
died due to COVID 19 in the previous 24 hours, the total number of associated deaths to
10,023. The confirmed number of COVID-19 cases in the country increased by around 6000 to
92,472 on Saturday (the second-highest number of cases in the world after the US). As of
now, March 2020, Italy is one of the world’s centers of active corona virus with 73,880 active
cases. Prime Minister Conte couldn’t help but cry because they are trying their best considering
that they have the advance technologies when it comes to the medical field and yet they cannot
control the continuous increasing number of COVID19 cases. The number of deaths is
continuously increasing as well as the cases; twice or sometimes trice the number of recoveries.
According to Conte, if the numbers of cases and deaths do not decrease or even stop, he’s
planning to imposed a complete lockdown wherein all establishments even the important ones
will be close except for Hospitals. As of today, March 30, 2020, the confirmed cases of COVID
19 in Italy is 97,989, the deaths are 10,779 and the number of recovered patients is 13,030.
As we see, the mentioned numbers for Italy’s cases and death are very huge to imagine,
everyday more than 500 people are dying due to this pandemic and until now they cannot find
something that will stop these number from increasing, they still need a lot of time for research
considering that they have the advance technology when it comes to this matter.
In times like this the use of analytics is very important for as to be aware on the update
regarding the number of cases so that we could analyze; prepare and do something about it.
Tallying all the cases, including the person under investigation (PUI) and person under
monitoring (PUM) on all regions and cities just like what governors have been doing here in our
city. These data will help government leaders to further understand how are they going to
combat this COVID 19 pandemic. Let’s say for example, we all know that Philippines used to be
filled with a huge crowd and unending traffic and long queues resulting to a very high risk of
spreading the virus, with this, government decided to suspend classes as well of some of the
businesses and companies and asked people to stay at home and practice social distancing.
This is because they have seen the data; number of cases and its continuous increasing that is
why they responded very quick and imposed an enhance community quarantine. Analytics plays
a premium role almost on everything, to be able to further understand situations and to be able
to deal with it, especially in times like this, this will help not only to let us know regarding the
numbers of cases but also to let the government know and analyze what they have to impose
and not, what they should implement to the cities and not, etc. This will help the government to
decide on how are we going to decrease and stop the continuous spreading of this COVID 19
pandemic. Our country’s economy will surely be held back after this crisis, but I am looking
forward that we could come back stronger, my prayers goes to all our front liners who are
risking their lives trying to save ours, and of course to everyone including our countrymen,
country and the world. May this pandemic end soon and I know that analytics will help our
governments to decide on how are we going to get through this.
